Baseball America Archives: Chats
SportsNation Jim Callis: Hi, everyone! Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays. The Prospect Handbook is done . . . on to your questions.
Andrew Eden Prairie, Minnesota: Do you think the yankees should put Austin Jackson in the Santana deal or should they just keep him so he'll be thier center-fielder in the future?
SportsNation Jim Callis: I think it has been three weeks since I last chatted, and there still are several Santana trade-related questions . . . I like Austin Jackson, and I put him on my personal Top 50 prospects list int the Handbook. But he's not a lock, he's coming off one good year, he hasn't played above high Class A. I wouldn't let Austin Jackson be the sticking point in a Santana deal, no.
Andrew Eden Prairie, Minnesota: Do you think Jay Bruce is the most dominant athlete right know in the minors?
SportsNation Jim Callis: We'll go back to Andrew . . . I wouldn't say he's the most dominant athlete, but he is the best prospect.
Jeff (Walnut Creek CA): What do you think the ceiling is for Travis Buck?
SportsNation Jim Callis: Solid regular. He can really hit, but I don't think he'll produce for enough power to be a star.
Mark ( NYC): Why do the yankees seem like they are trying to give away Melky Cabrera? The twins don't want him, so whats the deal with the Yankees?
SportsNation Jim Callis: It's called selling high. Cabrera has improved enough defensively to where I now believe he's capable in center field and can be a decent to solid regular there. And yes, I know he's young, but that .718 OPS last season was not good, and I'm not convinced on the power at all.
GK(Providence): Has Salcedo signed yet?
SportsNation Jim Callis: The latest from our international guru, Chris Kline, is that this guy is more fiction that fact. Overhyped and overpriced, and that's why he hasn't signed yet.
Jeff (Oakland): Do you think the A's got enough in return for Dan Haren? More quantity than quality?
SportsNation Jim Callis: More quantity than quality. Oakland's farm system has really, really thinned out to the point where it was one of the worst in the game, and this deal will replenish is. But considering that a) Haren's contract makes him a bargain and b) the only blue-chip guys they got for him were Brett Anderson (whom I love) and Carlos Gonzalez (whom I believe is somewhat overhyped), that's not good enough. Haren's contract should make him as desirable or more than Santana, and what the A's got doesn't stack up to the rumored Santana packages.
Alon (Brooklyn): Any shot the Mets can get Santana or Bedard without giving up Reyes?
SportsNation Jim Callis: Can't see it, unless those guys get moved just for the sake of moving them. I don't see enough young talent for the Mets to make that move.
Jim Hamilton NJ: Greatings, do you think the Red Sox have enough in the tank to repeat as WS champs or is the post season too long and grueling and we can expect a dip in performance much like 2005 and 2006. Also is the minor league system strong enough if guys need a break or break down say in August again. Or do the Sox definatley need another front end starter like Santana in order to make the push?
SportsNation Jim Callis: They're no lock to survive three postseason rounds, but this team is much better equipped to defend than the 2004 edition was. They aren't losing anyone off the 2007 club (a big difference), and they have Buchholz, Ellsbury, Lowrie, Masterson and Moss ready to contribute and/or be major trade chips. With the playoffs on the line, they have the guy you'd want on the mound more than anyone else--Josh Beckett. And I think Dice-K is going to be a better pitcher this year, too.
Jon (Boston): What do you think of Ryan Kalish as a prospect? Is he in your top 100?
SportsNation Jim Callis: He's a center fielder who can really hit. Within the Red Sox system, compared him to Ellsbury, he's not as fast but is going to have more pop. I've only ranked my Top 50 so far . . . he very well could sneak into the end of the Top 100.
SportsNation Jim Callis: I will say this, too . . . I wrote a column back in the fall where I opined that the talent seemed down in the minors. Doing my Top 50 just reinoforced that conclusion.

Re: df
Luke (Des Moines): Hey Jim! If the '05 draft were held again knowing what we know now, in what order would the HS outfielders go?
SportsNation Jim Callis: For me, it would be: Bruce, Upton, Rasmus, Maybin, McCutchen. Luke is trying to sucker me into the lightning round with several interesting either/or questions, but we'll hold off for a few minutes.
Kyle (Seattle): Obviously there are a lot of differences with how each person at BA rates players. I think specifically about Carlos Triunfel. You dont seem to be as high on him as some others are. What are things you value highly in a prospect, and what aspects of a prospect do think are overrated by others?
SportsNation Jim Callis: Good point, Kyle, a prospect's beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I like Triunfel, but I do think it's very easy to get too caught up in his age and not look at the big picture. Yes, he did hit .300 as a 17-year-old in two Class A leagues. That's outstanding. But he didn't do anything else offensively (walk, hit for power, run), and I want to see some of that. The power is probably the best bet. The other thing that I think gets overlooked a lot is a guy's ability to stay at a position. I kept hearing how I undersold Daric Barton--well, I didn't, because there was no way he had the tools or work ethic to be a catcher. With Triunfel, he's very thick legged and will slow down, and there's zero chance he's a shortstop. So while I like him, I'm not going ga-ga and saying he's a 17-year-old SS who just hit .300.
Drew (FL): Jim, A couple Cubs questions for you: 1) Is Jose Ceda a similar story to Carlos Marmol? 2) Can Felix Pie have a Hunter Pence type impact this year with the bat?
SportsNation Jim Callis: 1) Not sure what you mean by similar story, but Ceda can have a Marmol-like impact. His arm is tremendous, but I think he's a year away from that impact. 2) No. Pie's bat isn't as good as Pence's.
Benjamin, Lawrence, KS: A Royals question please!! What do you know about Callapso, were the Royals smart to move Buckner for him? I thought we needed Buckner to fill out our rotation, and shouldn't you always error on the side of pitching depth? Always, how do you rate Hochevar?
SportsNation Jim Callis: I did not like that trade. The Royals need pitching more than anything, and Buckner has always been a sleeper favorite of mine. Getting Callaspo, a contact/non-power hitter who's a good defender at second, that's the type of move you make if you're a contender filling in a hole. Didn't like that trade at all. Hochevar was No. 42 on my Top 50--and Daniel Cortes was No. 41.
Harry (FL): Is Tony Thomas Jr. a guy that could make it to the bigs...or was his senior year @ FSU a fluke?
SportsNation Jim Callis: The Cubs think he's for real, as well as the best pure hitter in their farm system. Thomas made some real changes to his approach, so it wasn't like his big year came out of nowhere.
Josh Chicago: Carlos Quentin or Eric Byrnes?
SportsNation Jim Callis: For me, it would be: Bruce, Upton, Rasmus, Maybin, McCutchen. Luke is trying to sucker me into the lightning round with several interesting either/or questions, but we'll hold off for a few minutes.
