We live in interesting times. We live in the land of champions. On this first day of 2008, let's look ahead to some stories we'll be reading in the new year . . .
NEW YORK, Jan. 9 - The Baseball Writers Association of America last night announced that Rich Gossage and Jim Rice earned election into the Hall of Fame.
"It's about time," said Gossage. "What took them so long?
Rice had no comment.
"It was the strangest thing," said BBWAA official Jack O'Connell. "When I called Jim to tell him about his election, he snapped at me, said, 'Where'd you get this number?' and hung up."
WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 - Roger Clemens testified before Henry A. Waxman's House oversight committee yesterday and again denied the contents of the Mitchell Report.
"Like I told Mike Wallace on '60 Minutes,' I did not allow Brian McNamee to inject steroids, or any performance-enhancing substance into my buttocks," Clemens told Congress. "I always packed my own bag and carried my own bags and there was never any juice on my person. Everything I did in the twilight of my career was on the level."
Earlier in the day, Jose Canseco was arrested by Capitol Police when he became hostile at a security checkpoint. Canseco was carrying copies of his new book and got into a jam with authorities when he tried to crash the hearing.
"Roid rage," explained a contrite Canseco.
GLENDALE, Ariz., Feb. 4 - The New England Patriots last night completed the first 19-0 season in NFL history, defeating the Dallas Cowboys, 31-28, to win their fourth Super Bowl in seven seasons.
The game was marred by one of the more bizarre plays in postseason history when a man carrying a champagne bottle ran onto the field and tackled Randy Moss as Moss was striding toward the end zone after catching a pass from Tom Brady. Late Sunday night, authorities identified the troubled trespasser as Mercury Morris, a member of the 1972 Miami Dolphins.
"We don't know how he got past security," said an Arizona State Police officer. "But we confiscated a tape from the Patriots that showed Morris standing on the Cowboys sideline throughout the game. Thank goodness for the Estrella tape."
BOSTON, Feb. 6 - "Gentlemen, mount your ducks," Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said, officially starting the Patriots' duck boat parade down Boylston Street Tuesday.
Jonathan Kraft, son of the Patriots owner, rode in the lead float and hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy throughout the ceremony, refusing to let anyone else touch it.
"No chants about the Yankees today," said the son of the Patriots owner. "Looks like we've finally made it."
BOSTON, Feb. 12 - Jack Parker's Boston University Terriers last night won the Beanpot for the 12th time in 14 seasons . . .
TOKYO, March 26 - Red Sox rookie center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury hit for the cycle and went 5 for 5 as the Red Sox began their title defense with a 7-5 victory over the Oakland A's last night in the Tokyo Dome.
"Glad we didn't trade the kid," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona, who was ejected in the first inning for not wearing his standard uniform top.
Hideki Okajima picked up the save with a 1-2-3 ninth and presented the game ball to Jonathan Papelbon's dog.
Manny Ramírez hit two homers and spoke with NESN's Tina Cervasio after the game.
"When did the A's get this new ballpark?" asked Ramírez.
SAN ANTONIO, June 14 - The Celtics last night beat the Spurs, 114-110, to win the 17th championship in franchise history, the first flag for the green in 21 years.
Former Celtic coaches Rick Pitino and M.L. Carr joined the crowded celebration in the winner's locker room.
"Championship-driven, just like I told everybody," said a smiling Carr.
"This would have happened sooner if I had stayed," said Pitino.
"Wish I had come back and played with these guys," said broadcaster Reggie Miller.
BOSTON, July 20 - Bruins boss Charlie Jacobs yesterday fired every member of the coaching staff and front office and announced a new slogan for the 2008-09 season: "Invisible - It's called Bruins."
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y., July 28 - Jim Rice delivered a speech for the ages at Sunday's annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
"I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth," said the gracious Rice. "I didn't say much all the years that I played. I just wanted to play the game. It wasn't until I started working at NESN that I learned that the baseball writers are really a bunch of great guys. I've actually chartered a boat and I'm taking all the writers out deep sea fishing next weekend."
MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 3 - Republican presidential nominee John McCain stunned the nation last night when he announced that he's asking Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling to join the ticket as vice presidential running mate.
"Curt is a great American and he's not afraid to share his opinion," McCain told the delegates at the Republican National Convention.
"I'm flattered," Schilling wrote in his blog. "But I'm not sure I have time. I've already got a lot on my plate. It's not easy being a major league pitcher, pitching coach, player-manager, team physician, traveling secretary, and team historian. I've also got my new gaming company. Plus, Bud Selig has asked me to develop a reliable urine test for HGH. I've had to cut back on my work with Habitat for Humanity, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Army Corps of Engineers. But I respect Senator McCain and it's something I'll consider."

There was considerable confusion before the game when a troupe of Irish step-dancers entertained while the Dropkick Murphys performed "I'm Shipping Up to Boston." It was the handiwork of former Sox choreographer Dr. Charles Steinberg. California fans had no idea what was going on, but road-tripping members of Red Sox Nation enjoyed the show and stuck around for a postgame encore starring Papelbon.
"I guess this is a different constituency," said Steinberg. "It was kind of weird to see thousands of our fans leaving a World Series game that was still tied in the eighth inning."

BOSTON, Nov. 29 - Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino today announced the latest ticket-price hike for the 2009 season at Fenway Park. Box seats by the dugout will sell for $15,000 per game, with tickets for Yankee games going for $20,000.
"It's all about revenue streams and keeping up with the Yankees," said Lucchino.
Lucchino would not comment on rumors that the Sox plan to open the 2009 season against the Dodgers in Monte Carlo, but denied an Internet story that the ball club plans to change its name.
"We are not changing our name to the Boston Gold Sox," said Lucchino.

The hundreds of free parking spaces set aside at the new Yankee Stadium - courtesy of New York taxpayers - seem like a "large number," Mayor Bloomberg said Wednesday.
The Daily News reported exclusively Wednesday that tucked into the fine print of a $237 million tax-free bond issue for the new Stadium is a plan for taxpayers to subsidize a 660-space valet parking garage for the Yankees, their VIP guests, city vehicles and cops assigned to games.
Bloomberg said the free parking won't be forgotten when the city helps set parking rates for average fans.
The mayor controls two seats on a five-person board that will determine what fans pay for parking when the new Stadium opens next year. The group building the garages, Bronx Parking Development LLC, has two votes, and the Bronx borough president controls the fifth.
"It does sound like a large number," Bloomberg said of the free spaces. "We will certainly take that into account. I suppose there's some argument for a handful of free parking places."
Stadium parking fees for fans could jump to $29 in 2010 and rise again to $35 by 2014 - up from last year's $14 rate, according to an analysis included with the bond issue.
Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion said Wednesday the issue of the free spaces would be "examined and addressed" by the panel that imposes the parking prices for average fans.
The city is guaranteed $3.2 million a year in rent from the Stadium. But the bond analysis predicted the garages won't make enough money until 2014 to start paying the city back.
Bloomberg promised the city eventually would collect all of its cash, with interest.
"We will get our money," he said.
The garages are being subsidized with $70 million in taxpayer money from the state. The city is kicking in $32 million for parks that will sit atop two of the garages.

It is serious, but he was wrong about him being a) Yankee property and b) a good prospect. He's faster and better with the right arm, but he's really nothing special with either.

Those 3 have a huge advantage on everyone else. I guess Detroit and Florida have good ones as well.
Neither Boston nor New York will win Santana. Actually, I think Santana will stay in Minnesota this year and LAA will sign him as a free agent to a 5-year/$125M+ deal. Boston will fight for him, but the Angels will get him to add to their staff. It will be good for the Angels, and the A.L. Central.
I thought about it,and God almighty that would be f uqin' horrible for the Angels to EVER get Johan,oh hell no!! That would give them Johan,Lackey,and Escobar? not the ps roto one wants to face. It's much better for everyone who doesn't get him for Johan to stay in Minny as long as possible,if he must remain in the AL.

If the Angels get Santana everyone might as well go home. Its bad enough that team is fuking good right now. Aybar or Wood can easily replace what Cabrera did and having Hunter only further deepens their team. Their 1-2-3 are dam good already. Yea boston beat them in the playoffs but they were banged up and now they have Hunter and a position for Wood.

Well you guys got Mike Main from Deland High School which isnt too far from Orlando where I stay. The kids amazing. Hits 99 without trying, and actually was throwing that high early in high school. The kid is gona be a star, same goes for Michael Burgess in the Nats system. I actually played against Burgess and the guy is amazing.

I think it's safe to say the Yankee / Redsox rivalry is as intense as ever. Especially since the Redsox have broken through with a couple of Championships. This is absolutey a titanic struggle featuring two powerhouse franchises who've been at each other for many many years. Certainly more intense than the lame "rivalry" between the Cards and Cubs.

Not to mention the Yankees signed admitted drug users (illegal) in Gooden and Strawberry after the mets cut them loose. Has anyone forgotten the episode with Cone in the Philadelphia hotel room where he was charged with abusing a young woman? The mets traded him the next off season!

TAMPA - Nearly half a year later, Jerry Reese's comments still sting ex-Giant Luke Petitgout.
In many ways, the Giant GM's criticisms are more painful than the knee injury that ended the season for the Bucs' left tackle in Week 4.
"The way I went out there wasn't the way I thought it would be, so it sticks in there a little bit," Petitgout said Wednesday of being released by the Giants in the offseason after eight seasons with the club. "Things that were said regarding me by Jerry Reese on the eve of training camp certainly stick with me. Someday I'll get even. Just not this Sunday."
While Petitgout is on injured reserve, there are two other former Giants with something to prove to Giants management when the Bucs play the Giants on Sunday in the wild-card round.
Like Petitgout, wide receiver Ike Hilliard is a former first-round pick who spent eight seasons with the Giants before joining Tampa Bay as a free agent in 2005. And December's special teams player of the month, kicker Matt Bryant, would love nothing more than to beat the team that cut him in 2004 with a last-second field goal this weekend.
"There's definitely...anytime you get kicked out of a team, you got some hard feelings," Petitgout said. "They'll be using it as motivation, that is all you can do."
Petitgout has all the motivation he needs for the rest of his career after Reese reportedly called the left tackle "a marginal player for a long time" on the eve of training camp last summer.
Petitgout was released on Feb.12, 2007 by the Giants after he broke his left leg nine games into the 2006 season.
"People are so worried about left tackle ... I think that's so overrated," Reese reportedly said of Petitgout, who was replaced by David Diehl. "People act like Petitgout was the second coming. He never made the Pro Bowl, and I don't think he ever was a first alternate. Now all of a sudden he's the savior? That's ridiculous. I don't think we're that bad off without Luke Petitgout. He was not a star left tackle. He was a solid left tackle on some occasions and other times he wasn't."
If the Giants thought Hilliard's best days were behind him, the wide receiver has caught a team-high 62 balls for 722 yards and a touchdown this season.
"(The Giants) didn't want me to play with them anymore," said Hilliard, the seventh player taken in the 1997 draft. "I have been blessed to have found a home where I have a coach that actually believes I can play and trusted me with a lot of situations and I have been fortunate enough to make some plays."
Bryant, who is 28-for-33 this season, would love to kick the Giants into the offseason.
"It was definitely a rocky road from the get-go to the end," Bryant said of his two seasons with the Giants in which he made 37 of 46 field goals. "It's some series of unfortunate events that you hate to see happen, but sometimes it is not an organization, sometimes it is just people. I won't go into too much detail, but it would be fun to play this organization again.

And there is nobody else left. I have always backed Omar but, if he dose not get this deal done it will be his worst decision ever. Santana is a perfect fit for this team and there is no way that money should be an issue. With the new park and higher prices I will really be down on the Mets front office and Ownership. Why is this trade not done yet?!?! No other team really wants him. And the Mets need him more that any of these other teams. The Yanks and Sox only want to block the other from getting him. The gamesmanship has begun.
When the Giants showed up yesterday to begin four days of preparation for Sunday's playoff game in Tampa, they were greeted with this quote from Bucs cornerback Ronde Barber:
"Of course we want to play the Giants. They [win] ugly, Shockey's hurt and Eli has been inconsistent."
In the annals of bulletin-board material, it's a mild jab, delivered Dec. 18 during Ronde and Tiki Barber's Sirius satellite radio show, "The Barber Shop." Ronde made the remark after Tiki asked him whether he'd prefer to face the Vikings or the Giants in the first round.
No player claimed credit for posting the quote, but it was definitely seen in its perch near the locker room. It could provide more motivation for a team that has thrived on slights, perceived and real, from around the airwaves and the league.
"Typical Barbers," said Antonio Pierce, who has taken issue with some of Tiki's shots at his old team this season. "I think it's beautiful. We like being known as the one team that shouldn't be here. Maybe we'll go out on Sunday and play different than what people think is usual for us."
This season began with Tiki Barber calling out Eli Manning for the quarterback's "comical" attempts at leading the Giants in 2006. That was Barber's last season, before he jumped into the NBC studio. Manning fired back in training camp, and that move, combined with the new tone set by Tom Coughlin, forged a team unity that has fostered an "us against them" attitude.
Now, more than a few Giants noted the odd coincidence of Tiki's brother providing them with more fodder for unity.
"I guess it is [unusual]," David Diehl said. "Anytime someone gives you some bulletin-board material about your team, you notice it. It's about your team, so how could you not take it personally?"
A couple of Giants asked about Ronde's quote weren't impressed, or affected much. Manning, unsurprisingly, was one. He said he saw the quote but didn't have anything to say.
"The guy's entitled to his opinion," Brandon Jacobs said. "They haven't been winning so pretty, either. There's only one Patriots. That stuff doesn't really do anything for me."
"He's just trying to fire up his team," Justin Tuck said. "You still have to go out and win a football game."
Pierce has been the most vocal Giant this season when it comes to finding motivational tools on the Internet or in the papers. He's made sure to remind reporters of their incorrect predictions for the Giants' season, their incorrect picks for individual games and their incorrect assessments of the team's defense early on.
He doesn't know Ronde Barber but was willing to give Tiki's twin a bit of slack, even in a sarcastic way.
"He's got every right to say what he said," Pierce said. "They won their division, they're the No. 1 defense in the NFC. This is, honestly, what's good about football. We're underdogs. We're better off going down that road."
As for Tiki, he didn't return two phone messages seeking comments about the game between what he called on NBC his "adopted blood," the Giants, and his "real blood," his brother. He has said he will try to be at the game and will be on the Bucs' sideline with his brother.
Asked if he'll say anything to either Barber, Pierce smiled. "I'm only worried about the 53 guys on this team," he said. "Same as the whole year

I agree with DannP too. It’s a longshot, but everyone has their price. You can’t just write it off. Who’s to say the Yankees wouldn’t do something crazy like pay a 100 mil posting fee. 150? 200?
I think this could blow the lid off the whole posting system. Darvish is getting paid 1.75 million to do a job he could do for $15 mill in another country. It raises all kinds of issues, both economic and cultural.
Boras threatened to sue the NPB during the Matsuzaka fiasco. I think we could see something wild like that happen. I’m planning a future article on the topic.

The report was on the front page of Nikkan Sports (not Sports Nikkan) on New Years Day.
I tend to pay very little attention to what’s on the front page of the sports dailies as the headlines there are meant to attract people’s attention to buy the paper while passing through train stations.
This was all just speculation to tie into the Yankees opening a branch office in Japan this year and building a new stadium to open in 2009. The entire front page (much of which is not on the Web) reads like a MLB PR piece. (Hmm. I don’t suppose the Yanks will need someone bilingual to administer their computers in their Tokyo office?)
Anyway, nothing to see here. Please move on.

I see a tendency in the comments sections I’ve been looking at…Yank fans either Don’t know who he is or are worried he’s the next Igawa, and Japanese baseball fans are trying hardest to dismiss the whole idea.
So to the Japanese baseball fans…what do you make of Darvish’s contract? Is that a fair deal for him? If you were him would you want to play for the Yankees or would you want to stay in Japan so that people like you can have the league you want?

I like Stamf’s comment a lot.
For any NPB fans that might believe otherwise, lets be clear about one thing: It’s not only the Yankees. Like I said earlier, MLB are besides themselves over Darvish’s talent already and are going to pay any amount of money necessary in order to sign him. I know of several teams out here that are already lining up to empty out their pocketbooks to bring him over. Darvish has #1 staff ace potential and makeup and stuff that nets MLB pitchers 20 million plus per season if not more. He’s making the salary of a 7th inning relief specialist in the NPB. Combine this with the financial incentive the Fighters have to post him and you start to see the writing on the wall.
It’s quite possible that money alone won’t entice Darvish to come over, but my guess is that at a certain point he’s also going to want to prove himself against MLB level talent. It seems counter intuitive to think that a pitcher of his talent and makeup would be content not testing himself at the highest level of competition at some point.

I’ve heard many things on this matter. Though one thing I’ve never heard is that he hates America.
I’m remembering reading this article that says Darvish’s father has said he knows of several MLB teams who are interested in Darvish. It’s unknown if these teams have contacted his father or used other channels or not. Also, many MLB teams were interested in Darvish when he was drafted by the Fighters.
As for what Darvish has said, here’s a piece of a comment he said earlier this year:
I think we have to be creative. If all the players and people in the front offices have a positive attitude, I don’t think the game here will lose its popularity
This is what Darvish posted on his official website after Matsuzaka left to the majors. You can read more of this, in piece.
Finally, I have a feeling we’ll know better what Darvish’s plans are after the upcoming season when the 2008 Olympics are over and done with.

When the Yankees won the Igawa sweepstakes I didn’t think much of his success in MLB, and definetly in the Big Apple. Here was a pitcher who had more problems than we could count with Hanshin.
Though, the Igawa failure is still fresh in the minds of Yankee fans. Though this is the Yankees, if a player fails here all they have to do is count their losses and move on with their big payroll. My opinion is we shouldn’t really put too much weight into Igawa, since he’s nowhere on the level as Darvish or Matsuzaka. I didn’t believe he would do much to start out with the Yankees. My belief, is Yankees fans will easily forget Igawa in a heartbeat if the Yankees somehow end up with Darvish.
Switching to Japanese baseball fans, you can understand the worry for them if NPB loses Darvish. Darvish is argueably the biggest name in NPB. To lose him would be real hard to recover from. If I were a Fighters fan, I worry too about losing the face of my team. The question, would then go to who replaces Darvish?
Though the astronomical posting fee that Darvish would net if he were posted would help me feel better about that. Though so far, Seibu hasn’t impressed me with their use of the Matsuzaka posting fee either. I be worried if a possible Darvish posting fee wouldn’t be solely going to making a better product on the field.
The answer to this is NPB needs to overhaul the pathetic player development model it has. Currently, the current farm system, doesn’t provide the resources neccessary to develop the future stars of tomorrow and neither does the draft, which is very short compared to the MLB draft.
As NPB teams only have one farm team to develop players is clearly unfit to further player development and in my opinion actually hampers what a team can do in the Draft. Like Valentine has been saying, NPB needs to add more minor league levels and it wouldn’t hurt to add more games to the minor league season either to further development of catchers and pitchers. With more minor league levels, it becomes easier to find potential diamonds in the rough.
What does this all mean? Let’s go back to what Darvish said, NPB has to be creative in keeping it’s popularity. Besides a few teams, there’s a big problem with doing anything creative in NPB. Though let me clear, players leaving to the majors isn’t killing NPB.
It’s not only the Yankees. Like I said earlier, MLB are besides themselves over Darvish’s talent already and are going to pay any amount of money necessary in order to sign him.
Of course, there’s plenty of teams besides the Yankees. The Cubs, Dodgers, Mets, Angels, Red Sox, Rangers, and Mariners all make sense to me. Then of course, if Boston gets involved with the posting, the figure could go through the roof.
Something tells me that if it becomes known one of those teams are interested in Darvish then the price could jump over $100M in a hurry. As for what Darvish would make annually in MLB, I like to see what Santana, Bedard, and Sabathia would make if they enter the open market. I think we’ll then get a better clue of how high Darvish could make annually. So far it looks like all of 3 of those pitchers I mentioned look to make a big payday on the open market, which bodes well for Darvish if he is MLB by age 25-26.
My belief is he’ll eventually ask to be posted sooner or later, probably after he accomplishes all he can in NPB.

One thing I always come back to with Darvish, and I say this never having lived in Japan and only having lived in Korea, is how much loyalty does he really feel to Japan? Like Stamf suggests…is he really willing to make less than 2 mil (about 13 mil less per year) so he can do good by the NPB and Japan?
In the case of a full-blooded Japanese person (and again, I’m using my frame of reference from Korea) I can see how they might become so loyal (read: dellusional) that they might actually withstand something like that. But my guess is that Darvish has never been allowed, or considered himself to be a “true” Japanese person. It’s terrible, and one of the things I’ll eventually have to face when I have kids who will be half-Korean. But when people say “oh, he won’t leave Japan. He’s loyal to Japan. He hates America,” I just can’t believe his feelings are that strong.

I agree with this point. I don’t think Darvish leaving the NPB would matter as much as people think. I think a lot of Japanese fans (well, probably baseball fans in general) go to games for the experience. And in Japan, moreso than other places, it’s an Experience. A party. I think it matters less who’s on the field. Ditto Korea.

I guess I didn’t explain that right. The front page of Nikkan Sports for January 1, 2008 has several articles. One is about the completion of the New Yankee Stadium in 2009. Another is about the Japanese players the Yankees have pursued and whether or not they managed to acquire them. A third article is about the Japanese players who have gone to the Majors via the posting system. There’s a paragraph long note with table about the projected 2008 Yankee starting rotation. With the exception of the posting system article, all of these little articles surrounding the main one look like PR pieces for the Yankees.
Then there’s the sensational headlines about Darvish commanding more than Matsuzaka’s 60-oku yen posting fee and becoming a Yankee next off season. Sub-headlines support this by claiming that the Yankees are setting up a Tokyo branch office, and stating that Darvish will likely be heading to the Majors after his big test in the Olympics.
The article starts off talking about the Hillman Connection. Hillman-kantoku had apparently talked highly of Darvish since his rookie year of 2005 with Yankee scouts. [sarcasm] Therefore the Yankees will get him! [/sarcasm]
I tend to stop reading when articles say things like:

It’s complete speculation. Since there are not facts available to support the claim that Darvish will be a future Yankee, they make something up. The first paragraph above concludes that, after participating in the Olympics, wouldn’t Darvish want to test himself in the Majors? The second paragraph gets around his never stating such by suggesting that the Yankees might maybe go through Yu’s father to convince him to go.
Is it possible that the Yankees will make it worth everyone’s while to post Darvish after 2008? Sure. But the article itself is fiction based on what someone believes might maybe could possibly happen. It’s a hodge podge of speculation sprinkled with somewhat related facts (thus the postings article below it for support).
Here’s my speculation about what happened at Nikkan Sports on December 31.
Chief: We need a front page for the New Year.
Editor: Well, the Yankees are paying us to run a few PR pieces. But none of is about Matsui.
Chief: That won’t do. We need something big. A face that everyone will recognize.
Editor: How about Darvish? He’s been real popular this year.
Chief: Great! Let’s do it. Staff Reporter! Come here!
SR: Yes chief?
Chief: I need Darvish on the front page. And somehow tie it into these PR pieces from the Yankees.
SR: Yes sir!
And so the January 1, 2008 front page came to be.

As for what Darvish would make annually in MLB, I like to see what Santana, Bedard, and Sabathia would make if they enter the open market. I think we’ll then get a better clue of how high Darvish could make annually. So far it looks like all of 3 of those pitchers I mentioned look to make a big payday on the open market, which bodes well for Darvish if he is MLB by age 25-26.
My belief is he’ll eventually ask to be posted sooner or later, probably after he accomplishes all he can in NPB.

One thing I always come back to with Darvish, and I say this never having lived in Japan and only having lived in Korea, is how much loyalty does he really feel to Japan? Like Stamf suggests…is he really willing to make less than 2 mil (about 13 mil less per year) so he can do good by the NPB and Japan?
In the case of a full-blooded Japanese person (and again, I’m using my frame of reference from Korea) I can see how they might become so loyal (read: dellusional) that they might actually withstand something like that. But my guess is that Darvish has never been allowed, or considered himself to be a “true” Japanese person. It’s terrible, and one of the things I’ll eventually have to face when I have kids who will be half-Korean. But when people say “oh, he won’t leave Japan. He’s loyal to Japan. He hates America,” I just can’t believe his feelings are that strong.

What does this all mean? Let’s go back to what Darvish said, NPB has to be creative in keeping it’s popularity. Besides a few teams, there’s a big problem with doing anything creative in NPB. Though let me clear, players leaving to the majors isn’t killing NPB.
I agree with this point. I don’t think Darvish leaving the NPB would matter as much as people think. I think a lot of Japanese fans (well, probably baseball fans in general) go to games for the experience. And in Japan, moreso than other places, it’s an Experience. A party. I think it matters less who’s on the field. Ditto Korea.

I guess I didn’t explain that right. The front page of Nikkan Sports for January 1, 2008 has several articles. One is about the completion of the New Yankee Stadium in 2009. Another is about the Japanese players the Yankees have pursued and whether or not they managed to acquire them. A third article is about the Japanese players who have gone to the Majors via the posting system. There’s a paragraph long note with table about the projected 2008 Yankee starting rotation. With the exception of the posting system article, all of these little articles surrounding the main one look like PR pieces for the Yankees.
Then there’s the sensational headlines about Darvish commanding more than Matsuzaka’s 60-oku yen posting fee and becoming a Yankee next off season. Sub-headlines support this by claiming that the Yankees are setting up a Tokyo branch office, and stating that Darvish will likely be heading to the Majors after his big test in the Olympics.
The article starts off talking about the Hillman Connection. Hillman-kantoku had apparently talked highly of Darvish since his rookie year of 2005 with Yankee scouts. [sarcasm] Therefore the Yankees will get him! [/sarcasm]
I tend to stop reading when articles say things like:

It’s complete speculation. Since there are not facts available to support the claim that Darvish will be a future Yankee, they make something up. The first paragraph above concludes that, after participating in the Olympics, wouldn’t Darvish want to test himself in the Majors? The second paragraph gets around his never stating such by suggesting that the Yankees might maybe go through Yu’s father to convince him to go.
Is it possible that the Yankees will make it worth everyone’s while to post Darvish after 2008? Sure. But the article itself is fiction based on what someone believes might maybe could possibly happen. It’s a hodge podge of speculation sprinkled with somewhat related facts (thus the postings article below it for support).
Here’s my speculation about what happened at Nikkan Sports on December 31.
Chief: We need a front page for the New Year.
Editor: Well, the Yankees are paying us to run a few PR pieces. But none of is about Matsui.
Chief: That won’t do. We need something big. A face that everyone will recognize.
Editor: How about Darvish? He’s been real popular this year.
Chief: Great! Let’s do it. Staff Reporter! Come here!
SR: Yes chief?
Chief: I need Darvish on the front page. And somehow tie it into these PR pieces from the Yankees.
SR: Yes sir!
And so the January 1, 2008 front page came to be.
