The Raiders are expected to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan by the end of the week and he could be hired by the Jets as early as next week to replace Bob Sutton, according to reports in the Oakland Tribune and other Oakland media outlets.

The fiery Ryan, who appears to be the perfect tonic for the lackluster Jets defense, coached with Mangini for four seasons in New England. He was the linebackers coach with the Patriots while Mangini coached the defensive backs and the two have remained close.



Ryan, the son of NFL defensive coaching legend Buddy Ryan, came under fire this season as Oakland (4-12) blew four fourth-quarter leads. Also, Raiders coach Lane Kiffin wants to bring aboard his father, Monte, whose contract is up in Tampa Bay.

This season, the Raiders finished 22nd in the NFL in total defense, allowing 341.6 yards per game. The unit, however, was short on talent.

The Jets defense under Sutton struggled for the second consecutive season, finishing 18th overall in the NFL, 29th against the run. For the second straight season, the unit didn't show improvement until an intense self-evaluation after the bye week that involved the entire staff. By then, it was too late to salvage the season.

Sutton, who spent the past seven seasons with the Jets, could land in Miami with Bill Parcells.

News out of Oakland is that Rob Ryan is in fact fired and that Lane Kiffin is trying to get his father, Monte Kiffin, to come in and take over the reins of the defense.


Sources indicate Ryan was told before the Raiders’ final game, against San Diego on Sunday, that he would not be returning in 2008 and had already secured his next place of employment, hardly a surprise but still somewhat remarkable in that just 12 months ago, Ryan received more than just cursory consideration for the head job Kiffin got.

This jives then with Ryan hugging players on the way out on Sunday. As noted, Ryan was considered heavily for the Raiders head job, so there was probably some uneasiness between him and Kiffin, and the way the defense played this season is a good chance for Kiffin to use to get rid of him.

The article notes that he’s already found a new job, and the Jets make the most sense. Mangini wanted him for the job originally, but had to settle on Sutton when the Raiders extended his contract.

I’m giddy at the thought of getting Ryan, I think he can do a great job with the defense, but the Front Office is still going to find some new faces for the front seven, we’ve squeezed enough blood from this stone

Hosmer Adds To Accolades

JUPITER, Fla.–One of amateur baseball’s most talked about players over the past few years has been Eric Hosmer, a sweet-swinging first baseman from South Florida.

His senior year is upon him, and he continued to build on his reputation by winning the MVP of the World Wood Bat Association fall championship today while helping his Braves Scout travel team to the title of the final major high school scouting event of the calendar year.

Hosmer had a hit and an RBI in three at-bats as he and a hand-picked collection of the country’s best high school seniors held off an Orlando-based travel team 4-3 today at Roger Dean Stadium. The event featured 80 teams from the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. One hundred and seventy-three games were played in almost exactly 96 hours at the spring training facility of the Cardinals and Marlins.

While Hosmer doesn’t depart as the consensus top high school prospect in the ‘08 prep draft class–that distinction still belongs to suburban Atlanta shortstop Tim Beckham, Missouri righthander Tim Melville or perhaps Riverside, Calif., catcher Kyle Skipworth–his track record and hitting ability are remarkable.

Hosmer has been the starting first baseman for American Heritage High in Plantation since his freshman year, racking up 23 career home runs in that span. As a junior, he batted just .372 with four home runs, but he had 14 doubles, 56 RBIs, 31 walks, 21 strikeouts and a .489 on-base percentage. He hit .548-10-42 as a sophomore.

In Jupiter, he was 10-for-21 with a home run and nine RBIs.

Orlando Scorpions righthander Anthony Figliola (Winter Springs, Fla., High) and East Cobb (Ga.) Astros lefty Brett DeVall shared pitcher of the tournament honors. Both pitchers could be top-five round draft picks in June, with DeVall possibly going in the top 50 picks.

Overall: Schuening arrived at Oregon State in 2003. During the next three seasons (2004-'06) he started 37 consecutive games. Schuening lacks ideal athleticism and explosiveness but he is a relentless drive blocker who can hold his own in pass protection.

Strengths: Possesses good height and relatively long arms for a guard. Displays good initial quickness and fires out of his stance as a run blocker. Has quick hands and does a good job with hand placement. More of a fist-fighting type than a mauler. Works hard to sustain his blocks. Is a natural knee bender. Aggressive in pass pro. Generally initiates contact, maintains balance and does a good job of mirroring and sliding in the short-area. Displays good awareness. Keeps his head on a swivel, finds twists, stunts and blitzes and plays with good discipline. Seems to have a good understanding of his assignments and the overall scheme.

Weaknesses: Lacks ideal bulk and is a bit top-heavy. Lacks ideal lower-body strength and plays with too narrow of a base. Does not drive defenders off the line of scrimmage as a run blocker. He's feisty and tough, but he's not a mauling type of guard. Rarely overpowers defenders at the point of attack as a run blocker. Will struggle to anchor versus powerful bull rush. Displays good short-area quickness but the more space he's in the less effective he becomes. He stays balanced but simply can't recover versus quick double moves at times. Not cut out to protect the QB on the perimeter. Suffered a hip strain that required surgery in 2005, which cost him the majority of that season.

Overall: Radovich arrived at USC in 2003 and was redshirted. During his first three seasons (2004-'06) he played in 25 games. Radovich started out as a tackle before moving to guard in the spring of 2005. He missed one game with a sprained hip in 2004 and received a medical redshirt for 2005 after sustaining a strained hip which required surgery. Radovich, a second-year starter at left guard in 2007, is not a prototypical mauler. In fact, he is a feisty, fist-fighting type of guard with good short-area quickness but limited mobility in space. Radovich projects as nothing more than a reserve in the NFL. He has the frame, toughness and experience to develop into a versatile backup at both guard and tackle positions. However, he is clearly much better suited to play inside and could only fill in at tackle in a pinch. Another healthy and productive season as a senior should land Radovich a spot in the late rounds of the 2008 draft.

Well, I feel its my duty to pass along any information I come across regarding the most blogged about player of this off season, Johan Santana.

Prospect Insider cites a executive with an National League club who said the following…

“Mets get Santana, but it’s going to cost them both outfielders (Carlos Gomez, Fernando Martinez) and two of their pitching prospects. I see Cincinnati snagging Bedard if they are willing to go Bailey-Votto-Cueto. Baltimore will have to come down from their demands and have already decided Bedard has very little chance to begin the year in their rotation, no matter what they are saying to the media.”

So there you have it folks, your first, and undoubtedly not your last, un-named source reporting ‘buzz’ on Johan in 2008.

Omar, please just get it done already.

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — The New York Rangers began 2008 Tuesday with a spirited practice followed by a flight to Calgary, where they will play the first of three tough games in Western Canada tonight against the Flames.

Winners of three straight and in second place in the Atlantic Division, a 20-15-4 record suggests a similar picture as the same point last year, when the team still was grasping at an identity at the halfway point of the season.

As opposed to last year, though, the needed ingredients might all be found from within.

With the NHL trade deadline less than two months out, Rangers general manager and president Glen Sather figures to at least be exploring ways to improve his team for another playoff push.

The difference might be in emphasis. Whereas last season's Rangers needed desperately to change the complexion of their roster to even qualify for the postseason — and did just that with the addition of Sean Avery and a few others — these Rangers might not need such drastic measures.

"Although the numbers suggest we're pretty much at the same point, I feel better about this group moving forward into the second half of the year than I did last year," Rangers coach Tom Renney said. "I think we've got enough here to win, but these next six weeks are pretty important. We'll see if we've got enough to get us over the top. We want to contend."

It was during the summer when the Rangers did most of the heavy lifting to that end, most notably with their signings of free-agent centers Scott Gomez and Chris Drury.

Both of those players started slowly but since have found their footing, especially Gomez, whose dynamic play of late also has stirred to life his right wing, Jaromir Jagr.

With Gomez and Drury allowing the Rangers two dangerous scoring lines, the areas worth addressing are likely elsewhere. Depth at defense is one concern, especially given the struggles of high-priced veteran Marek Malik.

And there is also the question of whether journeyman Stephen Valiquette is an adequate backup goaltender to Henrik Lundqvist.

But again, compared to a year ago, when the Rangers were thin everywhere other than their top line, these needs don't seem as pressing.

"Last year we relied on Jaromir's line a lot, and basically they'd go out and win games for us. Now basically we're a deeper team. We're a more mature team, and we have to start letting that reflect night in and night out," Brendan Shanahan said. "I do think last year earlier in the season we recognized we had certain needs and this year I think it's just been a matter of trying to get a healthy lineup. Because when everyone's healthy, we have some pretty good depth."

NOTE:

After signing Lundqvist to a one-year, $4.25 million contract last summer, the Rangers as of Tuesday could sign their franchise goaltender to an extension that won't count toward this season's salary cap.

Although a long-term deal for the goaltender is a priority to both sides, formal discussions haven't yet begun between Sather and Lundqvist's agent Don Meehan.

"Of course, I like it here, no question about it. I don't just like it, I love it. So we'll see how this works out," Lundqvist said.

The undersized tight end made a wise decision to return to school. Beckum could easily become the first tight end taken in the 2009 draft by improving bulk and strength.

Warren Sapp has played his last game as a Raider if not his final football game, period. So that's one spot that's definitely open, and one where the Raiders will likely begin their talent rebuild.

More than any other position, Oakland needs a run-stuffing down lineman, and while LSU's dynamic optimum fit Glenn Dorsey already may be gone when the Raiders pick at No. 3 or No. 4, it's a good year for defensive linemen. USC's Sedrick Ellis may be close to Dorsey in all-around ability, and Howie Long's son Chris will also be a top pick in the 2008 draft.

Being a football fan first and a Raider Fan second - Ryan made too many football mistakes as a coach. The run has been a problem for years and not putting pressure on the QB with blitz packages is another. I love the comments by the haters...here or on other Raider posts...these fans that only watch only 2 Raider games a year...or just see the ESPN Highlight reels. Reading comments like that make me laugh because if you believe what you post - ha ha ha!! To me Ryan was a good D-coach...he fired up the players when needed, he was vocal, but the things that needed to be done are the 2 listed above - that was his downfall. Once a Raider always a Raider - good luck to you on your endeavors Ryan.

Everyone here seems to think Ryan did great. One year with him our d played good, when you could beat us by scoring 10 points. So you cannot draw many conclusions from that. You can however from the fact that the Raiders have spent a ridiculous amount of 1,2 and 3rd round picks on their defense and still cannot make plays when they need to. He could not stop the run his whole time as d coordinator and as the d coordinator over a period of time they were his players he brought in. It was time to go

Rob Ryan wasn't the smartest coach. He plays too much of a base defense and never really blitzes enough. He plays to the old Raiders mystique, which isn't able to keep up with the game as it is played today. I like the man, but it is time for a change. Not only with him, but also getting rid of both DT's, better safties, and some OL work. Receivers would help as well. Need more speed out there, and someone who can run crisp routes. With that we will be much better than 4-12 and challenging for a division title soon, hopefully.

Lane Kiffin needs to look at the Detroit Lions. Rod Marinelli fired Donnie Henderson in order to hire his son-in-law. That move backfired and the Lions still finished under .500. There has to be a good reason why Monte Kiffin has never been a head coach. Numerous head coaches had limited or no experience as coordinators.

So what kind of message is the coach sending the team here? He says "I never told the offense that". So now the whole team knows not to trust him because he's not going to be up front with them. And if he hires his dad he should be fired on the spot. Who's going to be able to fire their father? And who would want to have somebody as a coach who would be willing to fire his father if he had to? The head coach should be fired based on this interview alone. But then again, I'm not a Raiders fan. I would fully expect him to be the next Lions coach if the Raiders were to do the right thing. And of course as a Lions fan, that sucks!

I have unfortunately been a Raiders fan all my life, Guess I have my dad to thank for that, I remember the D back in the early 80's, with Rod Martin, Lyle Alzado, Haines, and Hayes, and #37 Lester Hayes was a bad man, and then along came Howie, we had a great D, and last year it was a good, but this year it went straight down hill, Lane bringing in his father is a great idea, Monte knows D, and who can Lane rely on more than his own fathers experience. Even if you hate the Raiders, as most people do, you have to see the youth and talent this team is ammassing. As long as we don't waste another draft pick on someone like Robert Gallery, our LB's are very talented, DB's are as well, a OL or two, and a DL, and we will be OK, our QB should turn out to be pretty good, and our RB's are pretty good, could have kept Moss happy until Russell was ready to go, and we would have been better off, but Mario Manningham is out there. not as far off as 4-12 seems

As a Raven's fan, I have to wonder....there is some speculation here that Rex Ryan will get promoted to HC in the off season here in Baltimore. I wonder why not wait to see if that unfolds before taking over the Jets D. The Jets need a lot more talent brought in before they get good enough to take out New England. 1) You can't do math- The Dodgers payroll for '08 isn't even over 100 million

2) Joe had more salary on the payroll in NY than 123 million- The Yankee payroll on opening day of '07 was over 189 million.

The reason why Torre is a good fit and will get us a + 4-5 wins compared to Little is that he has better managing skills. Redhot, I didn't check all of the players you listed BUT .........You are using 2007 figures and we're talking 2008. And some of the players you listed haven't agreed to contracts for 2008 yet. Here's a decent source for contract info:

Thanks for the website. I agree with you for we aren't near the $123 million mark. We are somewhere above the 100 million. I do stand corrected I was using 2007 numbers. For 2008 it looks like it'll be around the same as some players salaries we finally tossed, some we added, some players salaries went up as others will be going down. I will say that this will be a special season no matter how much we spend. For all those who say the Frank McCourt doesn't spend well personally to me that's just not true. Mattingly is the hitting coach, he was going to be either the bench coach or hitting coach. I think Torre made the right move with that one. Also, Honnycutt is a great pitching coach. Look at what he has done with Penny. Penny use to be a thrower and now he is a true pitcher and a pretty damn good one. All of the pitchers have a great rapport with him and are happy that he will be returning.

1) You can't do math- The Dodgers payroll for '08 isn't even over 100 million

2) Joe had more salary on the payroll in NY than 123 million- The Yankee payroll on opening day of '07 was over 189 million.

The reason why Torre is a good fit and will get us a + 4-5 wins compared to Little is that he has better managing skills. He led a young Jeter,Williams (Bernie),Riveria,Posada right when they were just coming into the league. I believe Loney,Kemp,Ethier(If he stays),Kershaw and Billingsley will be special ballplayers. Will they be as good as the Yankee 4 that i have mentioned. Maybe or Maybe not but Joe is the right call to groom these ballplayers to the next level. Don't forget we also nabbed Donnie Baseball which in return will help as well. Yes we won't ever compare to the Yankees team salary but we are in the top 5-6 team payroll's. That's still with us paying our young studs chump change. Look at what Martin is making and we are getting away with MURDER!

Redhot, I didn't check all of the players you listed BUT .........You are using 2007 figures and we're talking 2008. And some of the players you listed haven't agreed to contracts for 2008 yet. Here's a decent source for contract info:

Thanks for the website. I agree with you for we aren't near the $123 million mark. We are somewhere above the 100 million. I do stand corrected I was using 2007 numbers. For 2008 it looks like it'll be around the same as some players salaries we finally tossed, some we added, some players salaries went up as others will be going down. I will say that this will be a special season no matter how much we spend. For all those who say the Frank McCourt doesn't spend well personally to me that's just not true. The Dodgers do spend and will continue to spend as we continually push the attendance every year. Carolina thanks for the post. Late

Mattingly is the hitting coach, he was going to be either the bench coach or hitting coach. I think Torre made the right move with that one. Also, Honnycutt is a great pitching coach. Look at what he has done with Penny. Penny use to be a thrower and now he is a true pitcher and a pretty damn good one. All of the pitchers have a great rapport with him and are happy that he will be returning.
