If the discussed 5-for-1 deal is made and Santana is signed to an extension, then the Mets will have three #1/2 level starters (Santana, Maine, Perez) all under age 30. With Pelfrey also still in the mix, this would give them a lot of stability in the rotation and they could augment the bottom of the staff with veterans relatively easily. Of course, we all know Wright and Reyes are at 3B and SS for the next decade, and Beltran is locked up at CF for another 4 seasons. So yes, their farm system would be wiped out, but they would be very much set at SP, 3B, SS, and CF, which are probably the most difficult areas to fill right now. Losing Fernando and Gomez would hurt, yes, but finding good corner outfielders or a first baseman is not nearly as hard as finding other positions. Moreover, the Mets will have 2 first round picks + a sandwich pick this coming draft, where Omar also suggests he will finally overslot. That, plus Omar's dedication to Latin teenage scouting, and we can hopefully replenish the farm somewhat quicker than in the past.

Now, to clarify, I don't believe that Omar should make the 5-for-1 deal as I think it is too much for 1 player and I don't think the Sox and the Yanks are seriously in the game right now to force Omar to commit to that package. I honestly don't know if a deal gets done without trading both Fernando and Gomez, but even so, Omar should find a way to salvage one of Guerra, Mulvey, or Humber (preferably Guerra) in that case. However, I am just making the point that even if the Mets deal the whole farm, they are not as bad off as people may think. We have no bona-fide 1B prospect ready to step in to replace Delgado, so that would have had to come from outside anyway (don't think for a minute that Fernando was starting at 1B for the Mets in 2009 at age 20). And if we are lucky, Ryan Church proves he belongs at RF, leaving just LF as an empty spot in the outfield (yes, I would have preferred keeping Milledge to Church, but I hope Omar proves right on Brian Schneider).

P.S. And contrary to what some think, I do not think Oliver Perez is leaving the Mets after 2008.

If I'm not mistaken....we have 3 picks in the 1st round of this next draft...is that correct? If so.....provided we do some solid scouting... we can rebuild that up and replace the guys we trade pretty quickly. As long as it doesn't include Fmart.

2 first round picks + 1 sandwich pick between rounds 1-2. But I honestly don't know if you can land Santana without giving up Fernando.

If we wait long enough, I think we can. I truly don't think Minny is stupid enough to keep him and lose him for nothing. And I don't think the NYY or Sawks ever wanted him. They just wanted to keep each other from getting him. Unless some other team steps up soon, before spring training, we should be able to get him for 4 guys not named Fmart. IMO of course.

As much as I don't want to see Fernando go, I think you have to part with him if you can get Santana.

BUT I don't think the Mets can afford to part with Fernando and Gomez.

A few other points:

1) Mike Carp is still just 21 years old and will probably repeat at AA Binghamton. He had an injury-riddled year in 2007 but there is still time for him to rebound and re-establish himself. Gary Carter swore on this guy when he managed him in St. Lucie.

2) Rememeber, Francisco Pena had just turned 17 last year when he played in the South Atlantic League. The SAL is made up of many college players, and if Pena was born in the U.S., he would have been a junior in high school last year. He will probably repeat at Hagerstown, but don't get too discouraged by his 2007 stats. This guy could still be a big prospect and make people forget about Jesus Flores. He's still obviously very raw though, but he definitely has MLB pedigree in his blood.

3) The Mets focused heavily on college relievers the past 2 years in the draft. This will hopefully bear fruit rather quickly, and if the Mets can fill their bullpen with young, low-salary players, this will only help when allocating much needed funds to fill the other voids in the coming years.

4) Moreove, if Omar considers the bullpen in good shape, and if he has Santana/Maine/Perez in the rotation, he may focus the 3 high picks in this year's draft towards hitting, which would help replace the void if Fernando and/or Gomez are dealt.

5) Like it or not, Luis Castillo is signed for 4 years at 2B, and Church is set at RF with Schneider at C. So 1B and LF are really the only 2 major voids coming up on the horizon. These 2 positions are usually much more plentiful than SP or other IF positions on the free agent market.

A Yankees Blog by Journal News beat writer Peter Abraham

http://yankees.lhblogs.com/

Now here’s some quality blogging from The Replacement Level Yankees Weblog.

They broke down defensive zone ratings for games when Chien-Ming Wang pitches as opposed to when he doesn’t pitch. Turns out the Yankees actually do play better defense when the Wanger is on the mound.

My belief is that Wang’s sinker is such a good pitch that it’s difficult for hitters to do much with it. It leads to grounders and weak fly balls. This negates the relative lack of strikeouts.

I also suspect that Wang fields more balls than an average pitcher because of the sinker. He gets a lot of outs himself.

Anyway, good stuff from RLYB.

Don’t forget, spring training tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. today. Ticketmaster has them.

yeah, i’m not worried about Wang winning any awards for brilliance… i just want to seem him continue to pitch effectively.

my preference to trade for Johan isnt because i dont think Wang can be that prototypical ‘Ace’, but because having more top of the rotation arms together is better than having less.

but i feel confident the Yankees will win the game when he takes the mound on any particular night.

i wonder how cliche it is to say that the defense seems to be better on the days he pitches because the players come into the game knowing they’ll be busy that particular day vs. a pitcher like Moose who takes more time between pitches, and the defense may lose their focus, or however you want to refer to it as… or if there is any hard truth to that

RLYW has excellent analysis. I highly recommend a daily visit … of course, after a visit to your site Pete.
2. Jorge Steinbrenner January 11th, 2008 at 9:35 am

I more than understand the sentiment that he should not be a traditional “ace who is able to stop the bleeding” type of pitcher on a great team. He is still an elite pitcher in this league, and my hope is that he will continue to do in a Yankee uniform for years to come. He is a joy to watch out there (except in the 2006 Playoffs Smile )

Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they’re fascist. Throw some ground balls - it’s more democratic.

(is that how you do the box thing?)

I don’t quite get what you’re saying…he should not be a “stop the bleeding” kind of pitcher? Do you mean he isn’t and we shouldn’t expect him to? Why not? Wang averages more innings per start over the last two years than any other yankee pitcher. And had a better ERA. And more wins than, I think, any other pitcher in baseball over the last two seasons — and not just due to run support. He pitched well and deep into games, frequently.

Chien-Ming Wang had a fingernail split that bothered him for the late part of 2007. Although he tried to pitch through it, the “bowling ball” affect of his hard sinker was evidently not there.
He’s healed and ready to start a new slate.
6. E-ROC January 11th, 2008 at 10:00 am

I wonder if Wang will win the CY Young this season. I hope he does or at least get a 20 win season.
7. whozat January 11th, 2008 at 10:03 am

Well, that wasn’t how you do the box-quote thing.

How do you do that?

So, in addition to standard html tags, what other stuff does the board support?

blockquote

strike

what else?
13. McLovin January 11th, 2008 at 10:38 am

Wang will one day win 20 games becausehe’s on a great team.He won’t get a Cy Young because the best defense for a team is strikeouts which the Red Sox did great at.You can’t be a Cy Young when you have about 199 hits in 199 innings.
14. whozat January 11th, 2008 at 10:39 am

arbitrary div’s?
15. whozat January 11th, 2008 at 10:42 am

You can’t be a Cy Young when you have about 199 hits in 199 innings.

Who cares? As long as he continues to pitch deep into games and not give up a lot of runs, who cares if he wins a Cy? I’d rather have a guy who throws lots of quick innings, gets his team back in the dugout and saves his bullpen. Wang’s done that for two straight years. Hopefully this fingernail thing won’t recur, he’ll work on another pitch he can use to force guys to swing at his sinker, and continue his excellence.
16. Yanksrule57 January 11th, 2008 at 10:48 am

One thing to consider is that the Wanger throws a lot of strikes. This keeps the infielders alert and may account for some level of improved defensive support. I have no idea how to quantify this, it is simple anecdotal evidence from watching him pitch.

Oh, and I got my tickets for ST!

And 37 year old Bobby Abreu steps to the plate...

Posted by: joe | January 10, 2008 at 02:11 PM

I've flip-flopped on the Santana issue numerous times now, but I hope he does indeed end up with the Mets....the Twins simply want too damn much from the Sox, yet obviously I don't want the Yanks getting stronger. Besides, it would make things more interesting in the putrid National League if the Mets are competitive again...and a one-two punch of Santana and a healthy Pedro might be enough to make a team the favorites in that awful league.

Posted by: DRM | January 10, 2008 at 03:26 PM

I know I've said I like Santana in Queens, just not sure which blog.

At 36 Jeter may be in the 1B mix. The man to push him is Carmen Angellini.

Posted by: BobK | January 10, 2008 at 04:54 PM

And remember the high spending Mets had the lead all year, but lost in the final second to the low spending Phillies, only for them to get swept in the first round by ?(the snakes or the rocks, help me)!

Posted by: BobK | January 10, 2008 at 04:58 PM

It was the Rockies who took out Philly in round 1...the D'backs took out the Cubbies.

I had to think about that a moment myself...that really was a forgettable postseason....I remember at the start I thought it had a chance to be one of the most thrilling in years, but the only series that was truly competitive was the ALCS between the Sawx and Cleveland.

Posted by: DRM | January 10, 2008 at 05:26 PM

I wanted Abreu over Sheff.

and Disgusted: back to ??????

Posted by: BobK | January 10, 2008 at 05:44 PM

I do also suspect the NL West may try to steal Santana from under Manaya's nose. I think they're rich enough, and even SF have some lose change with Barry gone. They spent big for Zito too, oh that one's funny!

Posted by: BobK | January 10, 2008 at 06:28 PM

As a Sox fan, I really would like to watch Lester pitch for us next year. Not because he is a role model for beating cancer, but because I think the guy can pitch. Santana to the Mets would be best for everyone involved.

And thank you for not jumping on the "Jaguars are going to beat the Pats" bandwagon that sports writers have stirred up. Weather pending, I agree. I expect the Pats to be moving on after this weekend. I want another Colts Pats battle!!!!

Yankees Farm and Santana's Change of Address

A little late on the report, but Baseball America released their top 10 Yankees prospects this week.
1. Joba Chamberlain, rhp
2. Austin Jackson, of
3. Jose Tabata, of
4. Ian Kennedy, rhp
5. Alan Horne, rhp
6. Jesus Montero, c
7. Jeff Marquez, rhp
8. Brett Gardner, of
9. Ross Ohlendorf, rhp
10. Andrew Brackman, rhp

Not many surprises here. Phil Hughes was excluded for his amount of major league innings and is no longer considered a prospect; he had the top spot in 2005 and 2006. Unfortunately the innings cap might prevent Joba or Hughes from rookie of the year consideration (if Hughes is indeed eligible) but I'm ok with that.

Austin Jackson and Jose Tabata's presense in the top three is an encouraging sign for Yankees fans. Tabata had an injured wrist last year (similar to Coco Crisp in 2006) and still managed to hit .300 with a lack of power. Expect him and Jackson in AA Trenton. With Matsui, Damon and Abreu's contracts up by the end of 2009, the fact two outfielders are among the elite Yankees prospects spells good fortune for New York. Expect to see Ross Ohlendorf in the Yankees bullpen this season and Brett Gardner to get a look in the majors at some point. Gardner has near Ellsbury speed and could complete the trio of young and high ceiling outfielders for the Yankees' future. He might start in AAA this year. As we all are probably aware, the issue with the Yankees farm lies in the infield, where only Robinson Cano is a below-30 potential fixture for years to come.

Baseball America projects this in 2011:
Catcher Austin Romine
First Base Jesus Montero
Second Base Robinson Cano
Third Base Alex Rodriguez
Shortstop Derek Jeter
Left Field Brett Gardner
Center Field Austin Jackson
Right Field Jose Tabata
Designated Hitter Bob Abreu
No. 1 Starter Joba Chamberlain
No. 2 Starter Phil Hughes
No. 3 Starter Chien-Ming Wang
No. 4 Starter Ian Kennedy
No. 5 Starter Alan Horne
Closer

Mark Melancon

Romine has started to open some eyes from the catcher's position, which has been long barren pretty much since Posada rose to prominance in the Yankees' system. We covered the trio in the outfield and BA agrees all three could and should be solid major leaguers. I can tell you one thing, that outfield would be defensively superior to the current one. Expect all of them to be major league ready by 2010 if they are going to pan out. I think assuming Horne, Chamberlain, Kennedy and Hughes all pan out is a bit optimistic but you expect that from a site that concentrates on minor league baseball. Seeing five homegrowns in the Yankees rotation might give a few people seizures and I would expect four of those five at best with one free agent or trade acquisition in the next three years. By 2009, all of those prospects in the rotation are due to be ready.

Mark Melancon is another interesting prospect. Along with JB Cox and Humberto Sanchez, Melancon missed all of 2007 and along with Sanchez, due to Tommy John surgery. I don't know much about him yet, but I will be monitoring him all season long, he apparently has electric stuff, which would make sense if he is being projected as Rivera's successor. I would think he will be in the bullpen by 2009, but could be a September callup.

This is where it gets interesting. Jeter is projected to be the starting shortstop at the age of 36, which makes his range very scary, but we will see how that works out, he's obviously going to be SOMEWHERE in 2011. A-Rod and Cano we know will be at third and second. Romine seems like wishful thinking for now at catcher, but the Yankees have a couple of other options like that too. The notable one is Jesus Montero at first. I would imagine Montero and Miranda are the top Yankees' first base prospects, both of whom have far jumped past Eric Duncan, who was ranked one of the top Yankees prospects of the decade and the top Yankees prospect in all of the farm system in 2005. Miranda came from Cuba and hits lefty with some pop, Montero was signed as a catcher at age 17, but he is so massive and has so much power that many think he will outgrow the catcher position and be converted to first base. Either situation works for the Yankees right now. Do I think either of them play in the majors? If Mark Teixera is not resigned by the Braves, I can't see the Yankees sitting out of that free agent frenzy so we will have to see.

I'm not sure if it is due to injuries or that they will end up in middle relief, but keep your eyes on Sanchez and Cox coming off of their injuries. Sanchez was the main piece in the Gary Sheffield trade and at one point was expected to be the 1-2 punch to Phil Hughes before Kennedy, Joba or Sanchez's TJ ever came along. Now there are rumors that he will be converted into a reliever-he could be the setup man of the future, but not until 2009 at the earliest I'd imagine. Melancon has more of a chance to pull a "Joba" this year. Dellin Betances, Kevin Whelan (if he can ever control his stuff), and guys like Jose Veras, Ross Ohlendorf and others have the potential to fill out the Yankees bullpen, some of them in spring training. There is a high chance that the Yankees can find their own Manny Delcarmen this season, the question is if they can find a Delcarmen, Okajima and if Rivera can stay elite. I would say yes, no and yes to those comparisons. Ohlendorf has a lot of upside if you saw him pitch last season, he just needs some, well, seasoning.

Santana could join the "other" New York team:

I hate to revisit this but the newest reports out of Minnesota have Johan Santana going to the Mets for an array of top prospects. As it is now, Carlos Gomez would anchor four Mets prospects (including Phil Humber) in a trade to Minnesota and the hangup, as usual , rests on the Twins wanting one more prospect, this time highly coverted Fernando Martinez. If you're a Mets fan or a prospect enthusiast you will know that including Martinez in the same deal with Gomez is like including Hughes and Kennedy or Buchholz and Ellsbury for New York and Boston fans-it's not happening. On the flip side, the Mets are more desperate than the Yankees and the Red Sox to acquire a top starter since they lost Tom Glavine, Pedro Martinez is injury prone and they are coming off the biggest regular season collapse in major league history and not one of their starters could step up to fix it.

To nobody's surprise, Hank Steinbrenner was quoted as saying that he is "leaning away from acquiring Santana". This, to me, is the most interesting quote of all during the saga. This is the first time somebody other than the Red Sox has legitimately become the frontrunner for Johan and all of a sudden Hank himself has changed his stance from wanting the pitcher, but not willing to offer a certain package of prospects, to altogether not being interested. Could Hank and Theo have both been playing the same game? This entire time the stances have changed from "Theo wants Santana so he could have the Red Sox dominate for years to come" to "Theo wants to raise the price on the Yankees and doesn't want Santana" to "Hank doesn't want Santana now that the Mets are in the lead". Could they both have not wanted him and been checking to see who blinked first? It seems awfully strange that now that the Mets are in the lead both Theo and Hank have not only stayed quiet, but have not even revised their "final" offers. I think if this deal happens, everybody wins-or at least gets what they wanted. The Wilpon family has spoken and Omar Minaya has the green light to sign the extension, if the deal is accepted.

On the flip side, Bill Smith now has what he wants. He got the three top offers from the three top payrolls in baseball, presumably the only three teams with enough money, prospects and desire to sign Santana. At this point standing pat makes absolutely no sense. The Yankees are losing interest, the Sox seem bored and the Mets have made what seems to be their best and final offer, which in my opinion, is every bit as good as the Yankees and Red Sox offers (minus Ellsbury and minus Kennedy). They can all afford the extension, but Smith is starting to lose their attention, now is the time to make a decision and call it a day. No more asking for five prospects, no more trying to get two top five and three additional top 15 prospects out of the system for a 29-year-old pitcher who the other teams are going to have to tie up for seven years instead of five. This is what you're getting and if you don't like it, enjoy your two draft picks next season. Waiting to use Santana, who has a no-trade clause, until the trade deadline in the hopes somebody with a lot of money and a deep farm are going to be struggling enough to justify a block buster, is risky business and one that a rookie GM can't afford to have backfire. Pull the trigger.

In other news, I will be in Key Biscayne, Florida until Sunday, so I will catch up with everybody after the Giants game.

Football predictions:

Giants: 27 Cowboys: 24 (Owens is hurting with an upper ankle sprain, Romo is distraced, winning three times in one season and beating a team who is 8-0 against everybody else on the road TWICE just seems to smell of an upset)

Colts: 30 Chargers: 17 (Manning will not have a repeat performance of the matchup earlier this season)

Patriots: 30 Jaguars: 24 (weather pending)

Packers: 24 Seahawks: 20 (Hasselback loses in regulation, this time.)

Ten teams with unfinished business

Pitchers and catchers report in a little over a month, yet as the plights of these 10 teams suggest, so much unfinished business remains.

Mets

For all the talk of Johan Santana, the Mets still seem more likely to sign free-agent right-hander Kyle Lohse than trade for the Twins' left-handed ace. The Twins, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, want both of the Mets' top outfield prospects, Carlos Gomez and Fernando Martinez, in addition to pitching. The Mets view that price as excessive.

Should they? One rival executive points out that star outfielders are easier to acquire than No. 1 starting pitchers, who almost never reach free agency. Gomez, 22, still must prove he can hit major-league pitching, but the Mets are much more reluctant to trade Martinez, who reached Class AA last season at age 18. He could reach the majors at 19 and is expected to develop into an offensive machine.

The Mets remain the team most likely to sign Johan Santana. (Jim McIsaac / Getty Images)

True, Santana is just what the Mets need, an ace for a rotation that includes Pedro Martinez, Oliver Perez, John Maine and Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez. Lohse, 29, likely would cost more than $40 million over four years, a price that no rational team wants to pay. Still, Lohse performed well under pressure for the Phillies in the final two months last season, and his stuff and durability are appealing.

The Mets could rationalize that, by acquiring Lohse instead of Santana, they could back up their veteran starters with youngsters Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Kevin Mulvey — and keep Gomez and Martinez, too. But none of those pitchers is expected to become a No. 1, and the Mets need an ace not only for this season, but also beyond.

Santana, who turns 29 on March 13, is four months younger than Lohse.

Yankees

It's difficult to argue with general manager Brian Cashman's reluctance to acquire Santana. The acquisition cost would be exorbitant, and the size of Santana's contract extreme. The problem is, the Yankees rotation without Santana might not provide enough innings.

Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina are the veterans; Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy the youngsters. Mussina, 39, has averaged 173 innings the past four seasons. The younger pitchers likely will follow prescribed innings limits. An injury to Wang or Pettitte would mean immediate trouble.

But the Yankees, after using 14 starters in 2005, 12 in '06 and 14 last season, are accustomed to summoning reinforcements. Their alternatives include the relatively experienced Kei Igawa, Jeff Karstens and Darrell Rasner, as well as youngsters such as Jeff Marquez, Alan Horne and Steven White.

Other teams are in a similar position, relying on younger pitchers for rotation depth, but the Yankees boast unparalleled resources. Cashman will look short-sighted if the Yankees come up short on pitching — a distinct possibility in the offensive-oriented American League.

Angels

The addition of right-hander Jon Garland further bolstered the pitching, but take a look at that infield: Chone Figgins, who is not a prototypical offensive third baseman; Erick Aybar, who has started only 13 major-league games at short; Howie Kendrick, who has played the equivalent of one full season; and Casey Kotchman, who has put together only one healthy season at first.

The Angels' front office is divided about how aggressively they should pursue White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko, because their greater need is at third. Kotchman had a nearly identical OPS to Konerko last season, and Kendry Morales, a switch-hitter, also should figure into the first-base/DH mix.

Figgins, the Angels' best leadoff man, needs to be in the lineup, but the addition of a third baseman would enable manager Mike Scioscia to move Figgins around, which was the plan if the Angels acquired Miguel Cabrera. Rather than pursue Konerko — and possibly give up Kendrick, a future batting champion — the Angels should revisit the trade market at third base.

Braves

Does anyone seriously expect the Braves to replace center fielder Andruw Jones with a combination of the unproven Josh Anderson, Gregor Blanco and Jordan Schafer? Maybe not, but that's the current plan.

At the moment, the Braves' interest in the A's Mark Kotsay is only exploratory, and they're also examining other short-term solutions. The idea is not to block Schafer, who has yet to play above Class A but could develop into another Steve Finley.

Andruw Jones' departure has left a gaping hole in center for the Braves. (Lisa Blumenfeld / Getty Images)

Kotsay, 32, would be a good fit if healthy, and he's a free agent at the end of the season. However, his $8 million salary is beyond the Braves' budget. The low-revenue A's would want a higher-caliber prospect if they included cash in the deal.

White Sox

This would be the perfect team to take a flier on Bartolo Colon or another pitcher coming off an injury. Jose Contreras, who posted a career-high 5.57 ERA last season, is the No. 3 starter, and the unproven John Danks and Gavin Floyd occupy the Nos. 4 and 5 spots. The White Sox need better to compete with the Indians and Tigers.

Youngsters Lance Broadway, Charlie Haeger and Jack Egbert all could contribute, but the White Sox's pitching questions are amplified by their plan to play Nick Swisher in center field. The Sox believe that Swisher improved last season and will benefit from playing in a smaller outfield, but let's not confuse him with Torii Hunter.

Cardinals

The reunion of Scott Rolen and Tony La Russa in spring training could produce more fireworks than the scheduled Roger Clemens-Brian McNamee showdown before Congress. But Rolen, coming off shoulder surgery and earning $33 million over the next three seasons, remains difficult to move.

The Cardinals do not want to lose more offense after trading Jim Edmonds and replacing David Eckstein with Cesar Izturis. Ideally they would like to add a more right-handed hitting outfielder to help reduce the pressure on Edmonds' projected replacement, Colby Rasmus.

Matt Clement, who did not pitch last season while recovering from shoulder surgery, is the only addition to the rotation. The team's goal will be to stay in contention early in the season, then get hot if Mark Mulder returns in May and Chris Carpenter at the All-Star break.

Padres

The physically questionable Edmonds takes over for Mike Cameron in center, and the Padres' current plan is to use Scott Hairston, a right-handed hitter, and Chase Headley, a switch-hitter in left. Such a platoon could work, but the Padres would benefit from more proven offense and better defense in left.

The pitching, first in the NL last season, could be even better if Randy Wolf and Mark Prior make successful returns from injuries. However, the Padres ranked only ninth in the NL in runs last season, and Cameron and Milton Bradley were two of their best offensive players. Run production again could be an issue.

Reds

Signing Francisco Cordero was nice, but Ken Rosenthal says the Reds haven't done much else. (Doug Benc / Getty Images)

OK, they spent $46 million on free-agent closer Francisco Cordero, but what else have they done to improve upon 72 wins for their new manager, Dusty Baker? Outside of trading center fielder Josh Hamilton to the Rangers for right-hander Edinson Volquez and minor-league lefty Danny Herrera, almost nothing.

The Reds want another quality starting pitcher to go with Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo, and they're willing to move right-hander Homer Bailey and first baseman Joey Votto to get the piece they need. Their problem is that they can't land an Erik Bedard without giving up their top outfield prospect, Jay Bruce. And Bruce is too valuable to move with Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. entering the final years of their contracts.

Orioles

Both Bedard and second baseman Brian Roberts are two years away from free agency, so the Orioles could hold off trading them until the July 31 non-waiver deadline or even next off-season. Then again, it would be just like the Orioles to keep Bedard and then watch his value diminish due to an injury.

Enough already. The Orioles need to get on with the rebuilding plan that began with the trade of shortstop Miguel Tejada. After they move their most marketable players, they can start trying to purge their less attractive parts, starting with third baseman Melvin Mora.

At the moment, the Orioles have no idea who their shortstop, center fielder and closer will be, but who cares? They might lose 100 games if they trade Bedard and Roberts, but at least they would be adding to their young foundation and pointing toward a better future. Their fans are tired of seeing Jay Payton, Aubrey Huff and Co.

Brewers

It's difficult to imagine they will outbid the Yankees for center fielder Mike Cameron, so their free-agent choice might boil down to Kenny Lofton or Luis Gonzalez. Lofton offers on-base percentage at the top of the order, and his .414 slugging percentage with the Rangers and Indians last season wasn't significantly below Gonzalez's .433 mark with the Dodgers.

The Brewers also could obtain a third baseman and move Ryan Braun to left field, or swap center fielder Bill Hall for a left-handed hitter. The team, however, has found it difficult to match up for a third baseman in a trade, and has little interest in free-agent third baseman Pedro Feliz due to his .288 career on-base percentage. Hall could move to third if the Brewers sign Cameron.

Top remaining trade candidates

Johan Santana (Twins, LHP); Erik Bedard (Orioles, LHP); Joe Blanton (A's, RHP); Brian Roberts (Orioles, 2B); Coco Crsip (Red Sox, CF); Mark Kotsay (A's, CF); Bill Hall (Brewers, CF); Scott Rolen (Cardinals, 3B); Brandon Inge (Tigers, 3B); Joe Crede (White Sox, 3B).

Buzz: Santana in the Driver’s Seat

According to multiple reports, the Mets may be in the driver’s seat with regards to Twins LHP Johan Santana.

…from what i can tell, it’s not the Mets or the Twins who are in the driver’s seat, though, it’s santana who is in the driver’s seat…

…yesterday’s report in the Star-Tribune really kicked up a lot of buzz, most of which i had been writing for weeks, and some that i had been sitting on but which is now slowly being confirmed…

…in the last day or so i have talked with people who are involved in these talks and who are closely watching it from the inside, as well as people who are connected to santana, and while a lot of details may be up left to interpretation, one thing for certain is that the Mets are seriously interested, they are the only major, pro-active player who is dealing with the Twins and things between the two sides are progressing…

According to WFAN’s Mike Francesa, speaking on air yesterday afternoon, the Twins continue to ask the Mets for Jose Reyes, which is essentially holding up the trade.

…from what i can gather, having talked with people connected to the teams and to reyes and to santana, as i wrote back in December, the Mets and Twins understand who can and cannot be involved in a potential trade…and while i believe the Mets are open to trading Fernando Martinez, though they do not want to and still feel they may not have to, the Twins understand that Jose Reyes is totally off the table - despite what francesa is saying, and others are reporting from time to time…

…by the way, thanks to Peter Wade for the WFAN information…

Meanwhile, according to today’s Daily News, as well as the Bergen Record, the Twins have yet to decide if they want major league-ready pieces or prospects.

…actually, i have heard it this way as well, which may be why some people keep fixating on reyes…i wonder if people hear ‘major-league ready talent’ and logically assume it means reyes…i rarely, if ever, hear specific names mentioned - so, to me, i have always interpreted ‘major-league ready talent’ to mean Aaron Heilman, because, from what i understand, the Twins have no interest in acquiring and paying a player like reyes, who is due roughly $20 million over the next three years…

…as for the Mets competition, as long as the Yankees hold on to Phil Hughes, which they still intend to do, the Mets are the only major, pro-active player for santana, who, by the way, still prefers to be on the Mets - as i have been writing for weeks…

…additionally, as i understand it, santana wants to know who he will be pitching for before pitchers and catchers report, especially if he’ll be switching leagues like he prefers to do - which is why i believe there will be a conclusion to this story before February, i.e., two to three weeks…

…so, if santana prefers to be on the Mets, as others have started to write of late as well, my question is: just how badly does he want that to happen…because, in some ways, he can dictate where he ends up…

Remember, in late October, he told the Star-Tribune that he will waive his no-trade clause - assuming he is appropriately compensated and is traded to a team with a legitimate chance of winning a World Series.

Later that month, reports indicated that Santana would consider vetoing a trade during the season so to encourage the Twins to make a move before opening day.

…from what i can tell, the Twins best card to play is ‘time,’ i.e., being able to drag their feet while being indecisive in hopes that a team like the Mets get nervous and overpay just to get a deal done…meanwhile, the Mets best card to play is understanding that santana prefers to pitch for them…

…the thing is, to what extent will santana go to force minnesota’s hand, which would then eliminate their luxury of time and help the Mets as well…

I don’t seem to understand how the Twins can still be demanding Reyes, and any reports of this are avoiding the reality that the Mets are the only team negotiating with any forward progress. That can always change, but the Yankees and Red Sox seem to be leaning in other directions. If this is indeed a one-horse race at the moment, why should the Mets even budge on Martinez, let alone Reyes? It’s a staring contest and I don’t think Omar should blink first. Santana would make the Mets a contender for the foreseeable future.

Good stuff. This is why you don’t just hand over every top prospect in the farm. Omar is playing his hand right. I really believe this can get done without giving up F-Mart.

Did anyone hear Ed coleman on MLB radiocast last night? A friend of mine said he heard it and Ed said that omar hasn’t talked to the Twins since the winter meetings and anything that were hearing is false. Can someone confirm that they heard this? I mean it seemed like things were moving forward but if this report is true then it’s just media fabrication and the mets are nowhere close to working a deal for Santana.

I gotta believe that that’s just “trade-speak” if you know what I mean? The teams are being tight-lipped about it. I wouldn’t believe that stuff.

i cant imagine thats true. i mean even if the twins will only take reyes. you have to figure the two sides have talked for no reason other than omar knows he needs santana and is definitely going to do everything in his power to get him as long as he’s still a twin. that report makes it sound too much like omar said “they wont do it w.o reyes, ok i give up time to go on vacation”.

Go to Mlb.com and you can see the 10 minute interview with Coleman. He states that Omar is in Israel but he talked to him and he is easily reachable.

The 5 for 1 seems a bit steep. I wonder if the Mets can get the Twins to throw in a AA player in return with Johan, someone who is decent, could soften the blow of losing 5 guys for 1. Maybe the guy turns out to be something maybe he’s a stiff. But, getting some sort of OF or pitcher with Johan would be nice.

Any one hear the FAN yesterday when they were comparing this to about 20 years ago when the Mets traded for Viola…a 29 year old lefty Twin; 4 or 5 players for 1 stud pitcher. Very similar circumstances…

I’d do it if they could even hang onto Gomez while trading Martinez. Ideally, of course, I’d try to hold onto Martinez. I think it’s pretty clear a deal will soon get done. Im very excited.

I say “sit tight Omar.” I think we may even be able to pull this off WITHOUT giving up F-Mart. We just gotta sit and wait out the Twins and hope the Yanks don’t give up Hughes. If they do, then throw in F-Mart.

Glider’s right. Sit tight, try to hold your ground, but if the Yanks do offer Hughes the Mets can’t top that without including Gomez and Fernando. They just can’t - Hughes is a sure thing and he’s young, he could be the ace of almost any team in baseball within 2-3 years. The kid’s a stud and if the Yanks start dangling him with cabrera (who is being undervalued, btw) and some mid levels again, I’d be willing to give up these 5 guys for him. The Mets just need Santana. For those of you who don’t want to ’sell the farm,’ what do you want? To have the same hole year after year? I just don’t get it, the Mets aren’t winning anything without a boost in SP and the probability is that only 1 or 2 of these 5 prospects will pan out anyways

agree 100%, if we dont trade for santana we’ll need an ace EVEN MORE next year bc pedro will either be gone or even OLDER. who knows who will resign by next offseason so we could be looking AGAIN for an ace after 09. this is a huge need that will not go away until its filled. but i do agree about sitting tight. only offer fmart+gomez if you have to ie hank the skank offers up hughes +.

I still think we should find a 5th starter that we can get for 2 years in the mean time so we can posture that we are happy with out team as it is. It will give us a bit more leverage. The thing that I wonder is why not see if we can trade Maine, Gomez and maybe Mulvey and/or Pelfrey. The Twins NEED Major league ready starters with what they are loosing this off season. We can sign a guy like Silva in the mean time and not give p the whole farm. Not sure they will take it but a rotation of

Santana
Pedro
O.P.
SIlva
El Duque /Humber

is not too bad. It is also the type of rotation Minaya like (Hispanic heavy)

Either way I am happy trading just about anytthing for Santan (even if we are over payinig). A chance to lock up a guy like Santana does not happen very often

The Brewers face strong competition for free-agent center fielder Mike Cameron, perhaps stronger than they even imagined.

The Yankees are showing serious interest in Cameron, major-league sources say, figuring that they could trade center fielder Melky Cabrera even if they do not send him to the Twins for left-hander Johan Santana.

What a retard move that would be. Mike Cameron is a 34 year old career .341 OBP guy who has no pop left in that bat.

Completely disagree.

Cameron is better than Melky in every aspect of the game. And if some team wants Melky and is willing to overpay for him with a nice prospect or a bullpen arm with upside it is a plus on two fronts for the Yankees. Cameron would also add some right handed power which the lineup has obviously been lacking in. Melky is not the long term answer in CF and neither is Cameron, but he is keeping the seat warm for the guy who might be Austin Jackson.

Those teams include the Cubs, Reds, Braves, Royals and Pirates.

A lot of team would be interested in Melky, and should be interesting to see what they could get for him.

That way of looking at it only works if what you get back for Cabrera is really worth it. It’s been said over and over that Cabrera has yet to show any power but he is still relatively young in baseball years, he might still develop some kind of power. The Yankees would be better off if they hold on to him until he has more value. Also, Austin Jackson had a pretty good half a season in Tampa with a high BABIP, lets hold off appointing him the heir apparent centerfielder for a little bit.

They are not going to just give him away. There is a market out there for him and they would take the best whole and fill holes in other places (like the bullpen). Acquring Cameron is hardly a "retard move".

He also could be at his peak. Cameron on the other hand could hit 25 HR's next year (he hit 21 last year, with his home park being Petco), a number I don't think Melky will ever sniff.

Fair enough, but there are options in the minors with high ceilings than Melky.

The cases of a guy's power peaking at age 22 is VERY rare. (unless he hit 30+ HR or something ) I would agree that Melky doesn't have a lot of power projection in him. but I would expect him to at least crack double figure at some point unless he gets run over by a car.

Cameron's game is also not without flaw. he's always going to whiff alot and thus his BA is never going to be that great. there's a fairly good chance that Cabrera could at least out OBP a guy who cracked .360 OBP once in his career.

He IS a better player than Cabrera . but He's also been looking like he's comming close to major decline. that he's banned for 25 game isn't helpful either.

Anyway. I certainly would have no problem if this means the Yanks land Santana or something very good with Melky, but somehow I have a hard time seeing that happening. I really hope they don't go and throw him for a Mike Gonzalez or something wink.gif

Austin Jackson is at least 1+ season away from the major if things go right. he looks like a great prospect right now but to think that he's going to be ready in significantly less than 2 season is just wrong. check out Vernon Well / Curtis Grandson's line in the FSL against Jackson's and how long it took them to establish themself after A+. even if Jackson beats them it's still going to be awhile (btw, Jackson profile is so amazingly similar to Granderson ... very similar size. both big basketball stars in HS.... even their game is somewhat similar... )

It probably means the Yankees are looking to move Melky, but I think it also shows what a number of people have been saying for a long time: Melky Cabrera is a far more pedestrian player with far less upside than many seem to think he is. Nice player, cost-controlled, but not a guy a high-budget team aspires to rely on.

As a Sox fan I would love to see the Yankees sign Cameron.
His D isn't close to what it used to be, he is 34, not a real threat with the bat and is suspended for the first 25gms.
As overrated as Melky is in CF, he is still probably better than Cameron will be next yr, nevermind the next 2-3 yrs (I've got to assume he gets at least a 3yr deal).

If they sign Cameron and trade Melky they would likely have the oldest OF in baseball.
Andruw Jones would have made a lot more sense for the NYY than Cameron
.

I see Gardner as very much like Juan Pierre in terms of overall value. Once he gets to the bigs the IF defense will cheat him and take away a lot of his GB hits and pitchers will cut down on his OBP because they'll just pound the zone since the worst he could do is a single. He doesn't have the crazy good contact ability that Pierre does to hit to the holes in the IF so his average is likely to fall in the 270ish range, however his OBP ability should compensate enough to place him around a 330 OBP, coupled with his better defense and still very good SB ability he'll have a good amount of value to some team. That being said since I've never seen the guy play there could very well be an issue in terms of scouting that would make him look more like a backup (maybe really bad contact issues that I dont see in last year's stats). Basically he's got some value, but to put him over the guys that Manuel put him over is a bit much.

From the descriptions it sounds like Gardner should be thrilled to be Juan Pierre. I remember being intrigued by Joey Gathright until I saw him play for the first time. Totally overmatched by MLB pitchers with no real swing to keep them honest. It still shocks me that Dayton Moore traded anything to get him. I remain convinced he'll never be a regular. I think Gardner looks an awful lot like he's on the Joey Gathright/Wily Taveras career path more so than even a Juan Pierre. When your best case scenario is a borderline major leaguer (Pierre) then you're nobody's top 10 prospect.

I say this all without ever having the pleasure of seeing Gardner swing. Anytime you have to base your opinion entirely off of stats and 2nd hand reports there should be some "take this fwiw" type of caveat. The moment I first saw Ellsbury swing (in the CWS after the draft) I knew he had a reasonable offensive upside. I've questioned his power at times but I never thought he profiled like Pierre or Brett Butler.

Yeah I suppose Gathright with better defense is a better comp, which is suprisingly a bottom tier starting CF not a 5th OF or 4th if everything goes right.

I understand that Pierre is heinously overpaid, but to call him a borderline major leaguer is excessive. Pierre is a career .301 hitter with a .348 OBP. Moreover, he's had two seasons where he's batted over .320 with a .370+ OBP, .400 SLG%, and 45 SB.

Obviously, a career .257 Eqa, and a WARP3 of >4 in each of the last three seasons suggests a high degree of futility, but last season the average NL CF'er posted a .275/.339/.433 line (.772 OPS). In his best seasons, he exceeded those numbes and added additional value on the basepaths. If the higher end projection for Gardner is that Juan Pierre, then he's a very useful player going forward. If, on the other hand, he is the Juan Pierre of the '06 and '07 Dodgers, then point taken.

Before it even starts, please do not get the Juan Pierre argument going in yet another thread. Seriously, when the hell did he become the new Kevin Youkilis on here???? Yikes.

Jan 11, 2008 11:57 am - Read: Big Year for Mike Carp

http://www.metsblog.com/

...posted by Matthew Cerrone...

In the Port St. Lucie News, Eric Phaler profiles Mets Double-A 1B Mike Carp, who is working out with other minor leaguers this week at Tradition Field.

Carp, who broke his finger last summer, hit just .251 with 11 HR for Binghamton last season.

…from what i recall, carp entered last season with a bit of hype surrounding him, especially after doing fairly well last spring in Carlos Delgado’s absence…

…the thing is, the sense i get is that minor-league experts may have soured on him a bit, wondering if he’ll ever be able to cut down on his strikeouts, all while he continues to struggle on defense at first base…

The Mets hold a $16 million option on Delgado’s contract for 2009, which they can buy out for $4 million.

Additionally, Braves 1B Mark Teixiera is currently eligible to be a free agent at the end of this coming season.

…so, this is a pretty big season for carp - to say the least…

I dunno about paying Delgado 16 mil, but even if Carp has a good season, he’ll need another after that. Getting Tex is, I guess, fine, but it smells like all-star buying yankee-style business.

you’re right, including the price of the buyout. Depends on the year he has, I guess. IF he looks closer to the guy he’s been his whole career than to the guy-coming-off-surgery-who-couldn’t-hit, I don’t mind paying him for one more to see if we can develop something in the minors (trade or otherwise). But I really don’t want to spend next year’s hotstove reading about the daily bidding war between the Mets and yanks.

Although, I wonder if Bora$’ antics with A-Rod annoyed the Hankster enough so that he’s going to play hardball with him on Tex (while Omar sweet talks his way into a deal).

This points out how you really can’t make such difinitive statements about the farm system, prospect status, etc. Things can change significantly from year to year.

Carp is a good example of a guy that used to be a hot prospect (well, relatively hot!) that had some issues, so the bloom is off the rose. And the pundits seem to be very quick to write off guys after 1 bad year, especially when injuires were involved.

So who knows about Carp. maybe he scuffles and you never hear from him again. Or maybe he is healthy and worked out all winter, and has an absolutely blow out year, and suddenly is a hot prospect again.

And I am sure there are plenty of other guys considered nobodies now, that maybe just ahven’t been able to fulfill their promise (talent), so who’s to say that some of them don’t “click” in any given year?

And if Carp rebounds to have a solid year, all the posters that call him trash now, throw him in, etc. will consider him the untouchable replacement for Delgado!

I made this prediction earlier. I will bet that at year end, some guy that is either looked at as a C prospect, or a name we never heard of, will leap up to become a top propect.

I just don’t know who it will be, but that is what Omar is supposed to figure out!

Maybe Carp will be a mediocre prospect, but wasnt’ that the same with the likes of Benny Agbayani, Bobby Jones and Timo Perez? They were decent players who helped the Mets win the National League Championship.

I’m not saying the Mets don’t need some starts, but if Carp just turns out to be a decent option for a few years, then he might be a good fit for 2009-10.

Yesterday, Matt posted an article stating that the Wilpons were willing to meet Santana’s financial demands, which will be in the neighborhood of $20M/season.

In addition, they’ve already met Piazza’s, Pedro’s, Beltran’s and Wagner’s financial demands, which indicates that if the player is talented, they’re willing to pony up the dough. So I have absolutely no reason to doubt that, if Tex’s demands are fair market value, the Wilpons will make it happen.

The Mets have the highest payroll in the NL, third highest in the league, and yet we continue to get these posts about the Wilpons being cheap.

I would rather pay Santana.

The Mets can surely find a first baseman for 2009 if they feel Carp’s not ready.

All they really need is a guy who they can slide into the 6 hole for a year if they don’t get a 30-HR guy before then.
It might not hurt, if Carp is ready, to platoon there until a better optino comes along.

many factors will go into what the Mets needs are at 1B.
1) the replacement they can find for Alou in LF. Losing your #5 and #6 hitter at the same time comlicates the situation.
2) the potential development of Church into an everyday middle of the lineup player. Its unlikely, but if he can be your 2009 #5 hitter it sure makes the situation a whole lot more managable. A Carp platoon as your everyday #7 hitter isnt so bad then.
3) Carp himself, and the development of other 1B in the system like Nick Evans and Lucas Duda who may make taking a short term situation like a Carp platoon easier knowing a real everyday player is on the way.
4) and of course the production of Delgado. If he gets closer to 2006 form then he is actually worth the 8 mil investment. (12m-4m buyout) And the whole issue can be put off for a year.

Again, a reason to be careful about gutting the farm system too much for one guy, since you never know when you need to pull up someone to play, or trade for someone else.

Prospects.

You know, Jerry Reese, the new GM of the NY Giants, took a lot of criticism for the draft he had last year. Mel Kiper rated him at a C-, similar to other pundits. So whaddaya know? The Giants have all eight rookies contributing this year, including the 250th player chosen out of 255 in the draft. His draft is now looking pretty good, all of a sudden.

Given Carp time. He’s shown flashes. He was injured last year. Plus, we know little about the drive and motivation of the person, beyond the stats.

Caleb Stewart also needs a bounce back year. He started out so hot he looking like a big league chip, then he fell on his face in the second half. He struggled so badly he’ll likely start in AA again this year.

I like the AA team this year with Parnell and Niese. Of course FM makes a big difference. If this Santana deal goes down, AAA will have nothing. That could be a long year in NO…

I have a feeling Delgago will have a more Delgado-like year. Not from 5 years ago, but 30+/100+/.290 would be nice. Then you bring him back and give more time for your prospects to develop.

Speaking of all the Santana talk, Ok, say we trade away the top tier, you have guys in A ball from the last 2 drafts that will rise up in the next 2 years (Niese, Kunz, Rustich, Vineyard, etc.) I’m not as concerned with position players, although I must confess, FMart will be good and I’d love to keep him.

30/100/.260 would be nice

.290 would make him MVP worthy, its not going to happen.

Yes, the Mets have the pitching lower in the system as its all they drafted last year. Smile The problem is that the Mets will either need to trade that next tier for the replacements to Pedro, Perez, and others or sign more free agents and lose more draft picks.

The Mets position player needs are minimal in the next 3-4 years, but two biggies are coming up with Alou and Delgado. Once replacements for those two are signed or traded for the farm can continue to grow.

The following positions are locked up for the number of years noted.
4 years: 2B, 3B, SS, CF, RF.
2 years: C.
1 year: LF, 1B*.
Yes Castillo may be a peg leg by his 4th year, and its likely (hopeful) that Beltran will be in RF by 2010, but they really have things covered for 3 years. So thats a real big plus.

In this case, it almost seems like it makes the most sense for the Mets to sign 5 top free agents next offseason as they are better off losing lower round draft picks all at once and having to rely on the latin pipeline for one year, rather than lose thier first round pick for 5+ years in a row trying to fill the evermoving holes that arise.

Dunn is a BB machine though too. This is wasted as he is about as fast as a chair. I’ve been in many a Dunn debate, and I usually find him to be adequate at best. For all his walks and homers he just doesnt produce enough runs, and playing 1/2 his games at Citi would decrease that some.

He wouldnt be a bad replacement for Alou though, but then the Mets would need Gomez in CF everyday so everything hit to L/C wouldnt be a triple.

Post Forget The DS, Wang Still The Man

A day or two ago I made a statement regarding Wang as being the best pitcher through the Yankees system since Pettitte and Rivera. I also pointed out the inclusion of someone like Joba within that argument, and mentioned that there is bias in my statement as he is my favourite player. Regardless of bias and temporary fan-blindness to negative aspects I still believe this guy is an incredible find, a great pitcher…and to steal a line from Jeter’s Yankeeography, “He’s just getting started”.

The Way a Player Should Be

I am a firm believer in sports personalities being role models. I know that may be difficult to believe in today’s climate with steroids, cheating, overzealous celebrations and so on, but there are some exceptions. Joe DiMaggio, at least on the field was someone who acted correctly and represented a solid role model. Exemplified when asked why he played so hard every day he said, “Some kid maybe seeing me for the first or last time - he deserves my best”. Such sentiment has clearly rubbed off on modern day Yankees such as Derek Jeter. Someone who like DiMaggio may have some exploits outside the field, but for the most part is someone to look up to in both his play on the field and in foundations like the “Turn 2 Foundation”. With Wang it is different. He is genuinely a role model both on and off the field with no room for debate. On the field his demeanour is steely and calm. Never one to show up an opponent with screams, chest beats or even a fist pump after an inning ending strikeout…or in his case an inning ending double play. Rarely does he even bask in the admiration of the fans when leaving the mound to what is, almost always cheers. Off the field he is arguably on a superstar level in Taiwan comparative to that of Dice-K in Japan. Even then he hardly shows off, spending the off season in his adopted parents house, while also supporting his birth parents, a situation that was revealed to him earlier last year. So what am I saying? Never celebrate, show off, while living only with your parents and never put a foot wrong. Not at all…Nobody is perfect, Wang included, but it is a change to the superstar athlete dripping with gold and bling, who will admire his homeruns, or do a dance after every strikeout before returning to discuss with his team-mates his new spinning rims and how many groupies he’s banged this week.

Best We Got

Bret Hart had the saying, “I’m the best there is, best there was and the best there ever will be”, Wang isn’t quite at that level, but he is the best the Yankees have, and detractors please understand that’s not too bad. On Opening Day Wang turns 28 and in my mind is the primary candidate for an Opening Day start, ahead of Pettitte, ahead of JHK or whoever fills the 5th spot. There has been a cool on the Wang admiration that occurred leading up to a Fenway showdown with Beckett in mid-September. Primarily because he didn’t win that game, didn’t win 20, didn’t get a whiff at the Cy Young and failed in the playoffs. The two bad/awful performances have lead to his reputation taking a huge hit. Apparently the guy who everyone praised as being fearless and calm under fire has lost his nerve. What a difference 2 starts makes! If I may can I dispel an issue or two here:

- He didn’t beat Beckett that day, but did lead the season series 3-2 v Boston, one of those loses coming in only his second start back after injury. Not saying that discounts it, but it’s been a trend in his first 2 full seasons that he doesn’t start well.

- He didn’t win 20, but is 46-18 in his career. Tell me we won’t be doing back flips of joy if any of JHK reach that mark in 3 seasons. Please, if you want an argument say he only wins because of excess run support.

- Didn’t win a Cy Young…true but only one person can. In a stats world obsessed with strikeouts is he ever going to? If Beckett can’t win after the year he had then what chance does Wang have?

- Where the 07 playoff starts good…NO absolutely not, I was tearing my hair out in disbelief, but don’t put a stigma on Wang the way some have done with Arod. Opinion is it is 3 bad starts to 1 good in the playoffs for Wang. Wrong, even though it was loss in LA, it was his playoff debut, he went six innings and but for fielding cock-ups would have had a great line and possibly a win. Detroit game was fine and was the last playoff win by a Yankee starter since Mussina in game 1 of 05. We all know he wasn’t pitching his best out there in 07, and issues with his delivery had been growing and were not fixed by Guidry. Also pitching on 3 days rest for the first time probably also skewed that performance slightly.

Progression

I would have loved a Beckett-esque intro to the baseball world, or a 20k performance. A ridiculously low ERA, a rookie of the year award and a Cy Young to finish it off. Reality bites, and that didn’t happen for Wang. What did though is telling and a great sign for the future:

- Improved record year by year. On pace for 20-21 wins if he had had the same number of starts as he did in 06. Would have been the first since Pettitte in 03 to hit 20 in Pinstripes.

- Has pitched pretty much 200 innings the last 2 years with no issues, which is more than you can say for some pitchers.

- Improvement in all stat areas including hits, homeruns and strikeouts.

- Secondary pitch development, that when you watch games like against the Mets, and against the Red Sox in the two home stars, shows that he is progressing in leaps and bounds with his slider and change.

- The above included while also maintaining his ability to induce double plays and groundballs with one of the most devastating pitches in the league.

All good stuff and all at a low, low price. What more could you ask for? Well a World Series on top of all the stuff that introduced this final paragraph. Give it time. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither is a great pitcher. It takes time and can be frustrating when some on other teams experience instant success. However consistency is key. Wang has been well above average in that sense and there’s no sign to suggest he can’t continue to improve and build upon what he’s done so far, which is pretty impressive and again at only 28 at the start of this season, “He’s just getting started”

Regards,

Chris, a.k.a TartanNYY

okay. let's just look at the player's attitude at each city theyve been. You mistake outrage with arrogance. CLemens talk to the media (til now i guess) everytime he pitches. WE LIKE ROGER ALOT...AS DOES HOUSTON AND TORONTO...boston slammed him....btw THANKS DUQETTE FOR THE 2000 ACE AND 2001 CY.

Sight exmaples of CLemens being arrogant outside of thie FIASCO. And i will list 10 of Bonds examples for each 1 of you CLemens. He is a stand up guy. ASK CURT SCHIILLING...says roger's honesty turned his career around.

-----

based on that post, I'm citing 10 examples of terrible character by Roger Clemens. This isn't 'arrogance' but 'terrible character' which is probably due to arrogance.

1) Hitting Mike Piazza in the head with your fastball

2) Paying off umpires with tee times to get wider strike zones (page 211-212, juiced)

3) Hiring a very shady character as your personal trainer who is a known steroid distributer and known person w. involvement w. GHB and possible rape case

4) Lying. Saying you didn't know you would be named by McNamee in the Mitchell Report, but then the truth comes out and the truth is you sent private investigators to his house days before the Mitchell report to catch him in a lie.

5) Lying. Saying you want to move closer to your family while you were in Boston. Your family is in Texas, you decide to move to Toronto.

6) Lying. Saying you were 'never injected by Brian McNamee, ever. ' Later you stated you were injected w. B12 and lidocaine from him.

7) Lying. Saying you don't know much about steroids, and that all steroids are good for are giving you a third ear on your forhead and pulling tractors with your teeth. On page 211-212 of "Juiced", you asked Canseco about the benefits of steroids. And in an interview with The Sporting News you said 'steroids are great for my mother'. So you do know the benefits of steorids, and you did lie

Cool Lying. Saying when you threw a splintered bat at Piazza you 'didn't know if it was the ball or the bat'

9) Lying. Saying when you threw a splintered bat at Piazza you "didn't know he was running down the basepaths"

10) Lying about your retirement numerous times and then only playing half a season for the money.

I also could point out how he's very rude to the media in interviews or that he used steroids.

There's 10 instances of bad character for Roger Clemens, I await your 100 on Bonds

ARROGANCE DISPLAYED BY BONDS...NOTE: HIS "LIES" ARE NOT PART OF THIS...NOR IS HIS HARD GOUND BALL THAT HITS ANOTHER IN THE "FOOT" LOL

1) The sad thing about Barry, is that prior to the 1999 season (when allegedly, his steroid use began), he already had the numbers to get into the hall of fame on the first ballot and would have been regarded as one of the ten greatest ballplayers of all time.

It?s the story of a man who flew too close to the sun.

2.)On ESPN, no mention of Barry's troubles, but rather reverence for his supreme skills; the mere steps he is from Ruth's record.

3>)-AM NOT SAYING HE DID ROIDS BUT..he has a head the size of a prize-winning pumpkin. ewwwwwwwwww c(^_^)p ... ..."what?" lol

4.) Barry did live in Bear Creek for a while. He once came down to the track to run during the off-season. Some kids at PE noticed him, and naturally asked for his autograph. He was such a ARROGANT PERSON that he waved them off, and just left instead of signing autographs

5.) being from syracuse...He picked a fight and called bob costas a tiny midget of a man because of hes recent show on hbo concerning bonds and the record. How weak is that!

6.) *cough* sorry but, Barry said babe ruths records are garbage because blacks werent in the league when he played...true or not...that record stood.

7.) Something about that ball with an asterick!! lol He said he is not going to the Hall if inducted if that ball is there ...if hes innocent tha ball could be treated.

8.) LOADED BAT

9.) One would be blind not to recognize Bond's arrogant attitude. It exhibits itself after every home run. It is written in the contempt on his face for every television camera. No one can deny the charge that Bonds public life is characterized by arrogance.
__________________________________________________________

10) BABE RUTH IS SOME DRUNK, OLD, FAT WHITE GUY WHO ATE TOO MANY HOT DOGS...EDWAR COULD TAKE NOTES!!!!

11.) BIG OL SIGN IN GIANT STADIUM..... RUTH DID IT ON BEER AND HOT DOGS

_________________________________________________________

some good ol fashioned barry quotes

12.) "Everyone in society should be a role model, not only for their own self-respect, but for respect from others. "

13.) I think some of the pressure comes from the expectations of other people. Like if your father played baseball, they expect you to be the big lifesaver or something when you play a sport.

14.) I was born to hit a baseball. I can hit a baseball.

15.) I'm not afraid to be lonely at the top.

16.) It's called talent. I just have it.

17.) It's not the name that makes the player. It's the player.

18.) My career is an open book, but my life is not.

19.) There is nothing better than walking out and hitting a home run.

20.) Those boos really motivate me to make something happen.
21) I didnt do steroid "knowingly" and "I never stop looking for things to try to make myself better.:

22.) "I've always played for the acceptance of my godfather (Willie Mays) and father (Bobby Bonds)."

23.)Serra High school, to me, was my most enjoyable time for me in my entire life. That was the only time I was free. We just played baseball because it was fun."

23.) "Sometimes I surprise my own damn self."

24.) Today's home run (number seventy), I was just in shock. The chance of hitting a home run off a guy (Dennis Springer) who throws that slow is slim. I just said, `What else can you give me, God? Enough is enough.'" - Jet (October 22, 2001)

i think thats sufficient...but would be HAPPY to do some more. its funny stuff

The Clemens And Bonds Difference.....
swiftyread Post #1: Jan 10, 2:50 am Quote | Report Violation
Total Posts: 250

This an article I copied and pasted to the Public Boards for their take...
Clemens is doing everything Bonds wouldn?t

By John Ryan
Monday, January 7th, 2008 at 3:30 pm in Giants, Baseball, Radio/TV.

Just got done watching the Roger Clemens press conference, which followed the ?60 Minutes? interview, and I can honestly say I just don?t know. Like most people, when the Mitchell report came out, I thought Clemens would have a lot more reason to hide the truth than Brian McNamee would. But the aggressive defense is serving him well in the court of public opinion, or at least in my court of personal opinion.

I can?t say I?m totally buying The Rocket. For one thing, I don?t even know why he and his lawyers played the tape because it added absolutely zero to the proceedings.

But look at it this way: Unlike Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire, Clemens is fighting for his reputation. Fighting for it, in fact, the way everyone has always said Bonds and Big Mac should.

Remember when ?Game of Shadows? came out? All Bonds could do was muster up some lawsuit that the authors shouldn?t be profiting from their ill-gotten grand jury testimony. That claim lasted about three minutes. And for all of Big Mac?s bluster regarding Jose Canseco?s book, where has that lawsuit gone?

Clemens filed a defamation lawsuit today against McNamee, and immediate speculation was that it would shield him from Congress. Then he says on his press conference, ?I?m going to Congress and I?m going to tell the truth.? That?s pretty unequivocal., and if anything changes between now and his arrival on Capitol Hill on 10 days, he?ll be destroyed for it. He?s putting himself out there.

Think of the steroid era and the main figures. Barry Bonds hasn?t sued anyone. Mark McGwire hasn?t sued anyone. Bo Jackson sued someone and got his name cleared immediately. Todd Helton threatened to sue and got his name cleared immediately.

I, too, wish Clemens had tried to nail down McNamee on the phone call and make him tell the truth. The whole thing seemed lawyered-up and pre-scripted from his perspective, plus we?re obviously dealing with a guy who has no money and serious family problems against a guy who has all the money in the world. (Funny note: Clemens, protesting how much money a lawsuit would cost him, has made $121 million in baseball salary.)

But before the ?60 Minutes? interview, there were threats from McNamee?s lawyer that The Rocket would be opening himself up to a defamation lawsuit if he lied about McNamee. Now The Rocket?s going on the offensive.

Not saying I believe him. Not saying the lawsuit is the be-all end-all sign of innocence (Marion Jones once sued Victor Conte, remember).

Just saying I?d be more inclined to believe Bonds and Big Mac if they showed this kind of outrage.

Blogger Larry Legend said...

I still don't buy it...

And keep in mind, the second of those two reports is BASED on the Star-Tribune story, which multiple Mets sources have said is a fabrication and absolutely not true.

Now we have the Yankees, including Brian Cashman on the YES Network last night, saying they are probably going to stick with what they have.

Of course, words like "probably" and "likely" along with phrases like "things could change" leave the door as open as it needs to be.

I still believe the Twins interests in talking to the Mets is driven by nothing more than their desire to get the Yankees to act.

Yankees and Mets officials believe this, as well, according to the New York Times story last night.

At the same time, it is entirely possible, if not likely, that this "we're probably going to stick with what we have" talk is nothing more than the Yankees chopping the Twins off at the knees and undermining any leverage they are attempting to create.

We'll see... Time will tell, and as I predicted yesterday. I imagine there is going to be a LOT more smoke in the coming days before we find out for certain exactly where the fire is.

But this much I do know... If Bill Smith takes what is being discussed with the Mets back to Minnesota after turning down Hughes, Cabrera, and prospects at the winter meetings, he is throwing the dirt on his own coffin.

And whether they are serious or not, all the reports about what the Red Sox offered would not help him in this situation either.

You can't have had the players he had on the table and go back to your fans a month later with an A-ball pitcher as your most promising player.

Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson

Welcome to The Show! On Friday, Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson will stop by to talk about the NFL season.

Send in your questions now and stop by at noon ET to join the chat!

Williamson Archive: Columns | Chats

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Hey Everyone, MW here. Let's get rolling on this chat a little bit early.

Ed (Boston): These predictions of a Jax upset are hilarious, the Pats are going to blow them out of the stadium. Your take?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: The Pats are going to blow them out of the stadium. The weather sounds clear-which is huge. Spread them out and throw and throw and throw. They win by 2 TDs. Maybe more. Pats are rested. BB had two weeks to work on his run D. Forgetaboutit.

PT (Franklin, NC): What do you think about the Raiders drafting Chris Long in the first and then a run stuffing DT in the second such as Frank Okam from Texas? Seems to me like it would go a long way towards shoring up that defensive line.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Heck yeah that would go a long way towards shoring up that DL!!! The problem is that it wouldn't help an O that needs a lot of help in its own right. However, if I were in Oakland's shoes, the top player on my board would be C Long. Very little bust potential. Play opposite Burgess. Run stopper. Do it all guy. And Howie's kid!

Majeed: M-Dub, Still sticking to your prediction of the Colts blowing out the Bolts.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Yup

CORY J/ ATLANTA: How is it going Matt? Please be kind to me today and tell me some of the potential free agents or Upcoming draftees that 49ers will be targeting this offseason.Help a struggling 9ers fan.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: They are struggling. They still need a lot and don't have their own first rounder-as I am sure you know. Lawson coming back will be huge, but L Allen is retiring. Gotta stick with Smith for at least one more year, but they need to find him a WR. Berrien? Bryant Johnson? Hackett? Need to find a successor to B Young. They need a lot! Can't give you good news. Sorry.

Majeed: M-Dub, So 2 blowouts so far. What about the NFC games? Blowouts there too?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Opposite. VERY tight games-especially in GBay.

Jay (CT): Matt, the Broncos are going to wind up letting Javon "its all about me" Walker go either by cutting him or trade. Any names you know of who may be available that Denver would think about? Marshall is the new #1 and Walker will not deal with that no matter what he is saying now.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: I agree with you. JWalk is history. Stokely is okay as a #3 and I agree that Marshall is now a legit #1. Denver is another team with a lot of serious needs all of a sudden and they do a pretty poor job drafting of late. They need a WR-maybe one of the guys I mentioned for San Fran. They also need at least one starting caliber OL-preferably at OT, a young S to groom, a run stopping DT and maybe a LB. Yikes.

Chris (Broadview Heights, OH): With Brett Favre saying he's feeling like coming back in 2008, how do you think Aaron Rodgers feels about this? Do you think he'll clamour for a trade? He could spend over 50% of his career as a backup when he was a first round pick.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Too hard to speculate how he feels, but I would guess that he will not rock the boat. Favre should come back. GBay is built for the long haul, with the possible exception of at QB.

Sam (NY): Matt, I fully expect the Pats to spread out the Jags with 4 WR/1 TE sets and exploit the Jags weak secondary, but with an injured Henderson and Jackson, not to mention the losses of Stroud and Peterson, doesn't the middle of the Jaguars defense look especially vulnerable?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: It does and I do think Maroney will be effective, esp between the tackles against fronts that aren't stacked against him. I can't see how NE does not put up 35 points in this game and I just don't see Jax doing the same. NE has so many ways to beat them on O.

Kellan (Ireland): If anyone is in diar need of a #2 WR its the Buffalo Bills. What they doing about this, FA, draft or possibly trade (Roy Williams perhaps)???

SportsNation Matt Williamson: They sure do! They need to add at least one big talented body at WR and/or TE. Really only missing part of the O right now. With the rest of their resources, attack the D. With Martz out, not sure that Roy is going anywhere.

Mike (Boston): What uniform do you see randy moss in next year?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Red white and blue. Too good of a thing going there right now. Take a little less to stay and play with Brady.

PT (Franklin, NC): Do you think that Oakland should go after Bernard Berrian in the offseason or some other playmaking WR?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Yes-they will probably lose Porter and Berrien would fit in well. Deep speed to use Russell's big arm. However, I am not in love with Berrien and think he will be overpriced on the open market.

matt, mpls: Forget #2 WR's. The Vikes need a #1. Any chance there is one on the team next season?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: A TRUE #1? Doubt it unless something crazy happens like trading for Fitz or 85 or Roy. Long shot there though. Could sure see their first round pick being a WR, but can't call a mid first round WR as TRUE #1 when the season starts.

Joe (St. Louis): Let's pretend like Parcells is not going to be smart and doesn't draft McFadden. The Rams would HAVE to take him at #2 even with Steve Jackson, wouldn't they?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: I wouldn't. Would much rather have either of the Long fellas before McFadden if I am in StL's shoes.

KS (NY): Do you think the Packers could spin Rodgers' preseason and one good half against Dallas this season into a Matt Schaub-esque trade with some desperate team in the offseason and get a couple of first day draft picks?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Perhaps. Was thinking the same thing when someone mentioned him earlier. Could then draft another QB high to learn from Favre. Perhaps. There is SUCH a need for QBs out there. I bet a lot of people in this chat are thinking "Hmmm, Aaron Rodgers. (Insert favorite team here) should deal a 2nd rounder for him."

chris(Salt Lake): Shouldn't the Raiders go for C Long in round 1, offensive line in round 2, and then a run stopping D-tackle in round 3.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Depends who is there in the 2nd and 3rd round. I sure like C Long in round 1, but speculating about who is gong to be available in the 2nd and 3rd round right now is nuts. TOO EARLY! Much will change on the draft board!

Dan (DC): Speaking of ridiculous comments, how about Jim Schwartz being the "frontrunner" for the Skins HC? He's the only person they've interviewed!! Seriously though -- who do you see getting the job?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Cowher. If he is ever going to come back to the NFL, this is the time. You know the $$$ will be more than with any other team and they have pieces in place. No inside info here on that, but that might be the job to jump on.

TJ , Houston: The Texans need to finally address the LT position. How would you rank Flozell, Stacey Andrews, Travelle Wharton, and Jordan Gross? Or would you simply move Winston over from RT?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Doubt Andrews leaves Cincy and he is a RT. Gross? Maybe. Could live with that for sure. Not a big Wharton fan here and think that Gross would be the better LT. Adams? Seems unlikely that he leaves Dallas either.

David (Tulsa): Any chance the Saints actually go out and spend money or a draft choice on a need this year? CB, S, LB?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: They REALLY need a CB. Big $$$ free agenty CB like Samuel. Will they pull the trigger? Hard to guess that. Expect a very heavy D draft though.

Jay (CT): Shanahan moves around a lot in drafts with some surprises i.e Jay Cutler in 2006. with that said, T. Henry is going to be gone and S. Young isnt a 20+ back and they have a bunch of picks this year. Will Shanny potentially make a move for McFadden?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Scroll back a bit-I think Den has to many other needs. They can insert a RB into that system. Need other peices first.

Donny (Dallas): Matt W., will the Tennessee Titans keep getting better with each passing year as Vince Young matures in the NFL?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Hard to say. If they don't get him two legit weapons to throw to, it won't matter. Also, if they lose Haynesworth (unlikely), this team will go very much backwards. Fisher is an excellent coach however and I do like VY for the long haul.

Bob (Syracuse): Does Miami take Dorsey? Mcfadden?? Long??? or do they trade down for multiple picks?? I hope they trade down but not too far...

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Trading down has to be the top priority, but dealinlg that pick is very difficult to pull off. Just too expensive to sign that player. If they stay, I would take C Long.

Mikey (Philly): Isn't the concept of a #1 WR equivalent to that of a #1 pitcher in baseball - meaning that there are only a dozen or so and everyone wants to add another one (except for my Eagles)?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: That is pretty much true. How many WRs out there would you consider a True #1? Maybe 20 guys at most. A few teams have two.

Ricky (Lubbock,Texas): What do u think about the cowboys and giants game? T.O. looks like he is going to play with practicing and the boys denfense is healthy for the first time this year.Plus having terry Glenn along side Owen

s.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Get the popcorn ready. I wrote that game up and predicted NYG in a very close game, but that was due three or four days ago. At that point, I was unsure about TO and wrote in there just how important he really is-he stirs the drink in Big D. Anyways, with TO in, I like Dallas by 10 or so.

Ed (PA): This was clearly Ben R.'s best season as a pro. He had a great deal more responsibility in the offense, and had little help from his oline. Do you see him continueing to improve as a QB, specifically decision making and reading coverage, or have we seen his ceiling?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Hasn't hit the ceiling yet. Will keep getting better with throwing the ball away, decision making and reading coverages.

Scott (OK): I am a big fan of Jamaal Charles but am concerned he might be another Trung Candidate or Tatum Bell. What do you think?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: I think he is a more natural runner than those two. Not as straight line. There are a lot of good RBs in this draft now-mostly jurniors.

TK (brooklyn): Any chance buffalo can trade Losman for a 3rd round pick?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: I think that is about what he is worth right now. Not sure I would do it though if I were Buff. I know he wants out, but who cares? Need a strong backup-Edwards isn't exactly proven ya know. Still, if I were say Carolina or Chicago, I would give up a 3rd for Losman for sure. Other teams would as well. Bidding war?

David (Tulsa): If the Saints were able to get one of the bigger name CB's do think they may pick up a MLB in the draft and maybe a younger CB in the draft? Mckenzie not getting any younger.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Let's say they do sign Trufant or Samuel. Then, I think I would take the best LB on the board in round one, unless an excellent DT was still there. Might ignore O completely and just keep taking the best D player on the board-regardless of positiion.

Jay (CT): If Bo Jackson never got hurt, would he hold every conceivable RB record? Being a Broncos fan I hate the Raiders but that dude was nasty and fun to watch and I beieve we all missed out on something special.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Couldn't agree more. RARE. Not sure that he would hold every record ever, but was a big fan myself.

Randy (Lexington): Matt, does New Orleans Saints need good recievers to be a good team?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Colston is an excellent WR. A true #1. The rest of the group are good enough. Brees makes their lives much easier. So, to answer your question-Yes and No. They need at least one star.

Mike (Boca Raton): do the steelers draft pitt ot jeff otah?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Wouldn't be a bad selection at all. Could maybe play OG right off the bat and eventually move to LT, since M Smith is a UFA after next year.

Garb ( Mass): Any chance Jets get Fitzgerald for 6th pick in draft and either coles or vilma

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Coles and the 6th pick for Fitz? I am sure that would get it done. Could make Zona a better team. Not sure that I would do it for NYJ though. Fitz is awesome, the Jets need linemen on both sides of the ball before plugging in skill guys.

Trevor (TX): Will the Texans take a RB on the first day? If so who and what round? I am thinking maybe Charles in the 3rd round.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: I think so as well. Not the first round, but in the top 3 rounds. Makes sense. Charles would work. Maybe Mike Hart.

Joe (Seattle): Are there going to be any West Coast Offense suitable RBs with a first round grade when the Seahawks pick?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Should be a lot of attractive RBs when Sea picks. Maybe R Rice, Mendenhall, Stewart if he comes out, the "other RB" at Arkansas if he declares.

Jeremy (OH): If the draft goes Dorsey then Long and the Raiders have the #3 Pick would they be crazy to pass on McFadden?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: I would then take Jake Long. RB isnt a massive need for Oak assuming they resign Fargas, which I bet they do.

Mike (Boston): who should the pats draft with their first round pick?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Must get younger at LB, so Laurenitis or Connor would make sense. Also will probably need a CB badly if Samuel leaves. Assuming Moss stays put.

Jeremy (OH): I was assuming STL took Jake Long. The Raiders would be between Long (DL) or McFadden.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Would rather have either Long than McFadden for Oak.

Mikey(Lackawanna,NY): What part of the 1st round do you see DE from the U Calias Campbell being drafted in? Do you think a good combine could elevate him into a Top 10 pick?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: I could see that. If he shows to be an elite athlete, then yes, top 10. Can't see him falling out of round 1 no matter what though. Gaint!

Tony (Brooklyn, NY): Pats take Lauriniatis in 1s round? Don't buy the Katzenmoyer comparison?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: No-much smarter and a far better reactor. Did you guys here that there are some playoff games this weekend?

Khan, tulsa OK: Who do you thin Cowboys will pick with their two picks in first round?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: If they keep Flozell, CB is the top need probably. Third guy to play right away in sub packages. Maybe a WR if they were to release Glenn. Honestly, they don't have many glaring needs. Will take a RB pretty high after losing J Jones too. Maybe a LT if they lose Adams, but doubt that happens.

Doug (NY): Giants have a better chance of success against the Boys thru the air or on the ground?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Going to see a lot of 8 man fronts with Roy W in the box. Still, they need to pound away with Jacobs over and over. Wear down that D. Overall success though? Prob through the air, since the matchups will be more favorable.

Jay (CT): why does the NFL hate cold weather and snow so much? If they held a Super Bowl in a cold weather city without a dome, people would most certainly still come. Can you imagine a Super Bowl in the snow on HD? Denver has a new stadium and great downtown with plenty of skiing too!

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Don't hold your breath on that!

Rick (MI): If the Raiders pass on McFadden because they have Fargas it will be alot like when they passed on E. George because they had Kaufman. (BTW they took R. Dudley)

SportsNation Matt Williamson: I hear ya, but I also have hopes for Bush. As a rule of thumb, I think adding a RB is the last piece. Build the lines! Get Russell another weapon to throw to. I like McFadden and wouldn't bash the Raiders for taking him, as he would take stress of their young QB, but I think that isn't the right project for this off season.

Tone (Chicago): Big dose of grant vrs the hawks?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: A good bit for sure along with a controlled quick strike WC type passing game. Would worry about protecting Favre to go deep a lot, but if Grant gets going, expect a big play off play action.

Dan (San Jose): Short of Brady leaving the game with an injury, what has to happen for the Jags to win this weekend? What is the Jax gameplan?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: They cannot get down by too much early on. Have to keep it close through the first half so they can keep running and running. Jax has an underrated passing attack, but by no means can they afford to get in a shoot out. That is the problem to me, Jax's D just isn't going to be able to keep up on the backend.

Majeed: M-Dub, Any chance Chargers can control the clock by pounding LT and Turner? I'd say that's their only shot to win.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: That is their only shot...unless Peyton throws 6 INTs again! Yeah, right. Don't see it though. Without Gates especially, Indy is really going to favor the running game. B Sanders will play up near the LOS.

Doug (NY): Giants only have 3 healthy DBs of which two are more than suspect. Over/under 350 yards for Romo?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: He has already put up real big numbers against NYG this year as well and Dallas has protected him quite well alos. Over 300 through the air.

Ryan (Chicago,IL): What year did you start working for the Browns?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: I was only with the Browns for one year. Got there as K2's draft class was reporting and left right after the Braylon draft.

Displaced Bears Fan (Tampa): Please answer a Bear question. We need some good news. In your opinion what will their quarterback situation look like for 08?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Can't see McNabb being traded, but that would be ideal for Chi. Its ugly. Could see them enter the season with Orton, Griese and Woodson as a first rounder.

Ryan(Chicago,IL): You touched on Vikins receiver issues a little bit ago. Fitz is from Minny, any chance the Cardinals move him? His cap number is 15 million for 08.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Would be a great fit for both Larry and the Vikes. Perhaps. First rounder for Fitz? Maybe more.

Jeremy (Bellevue, Wa): Speaking B Edwards what do you think about the strides he has made this yr? He appears to have matured on and off the field.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Tremendously. Superstar now. Top 10 WR without any doubt and should continue to get even better. Will drop a few that he should catch, but this guy has it all.

BRYAN (OH): WHAT ABOUT DERICK ANDERSON??? How come you haven't mentioned him as possible trade bait?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Should have. Could see him in Chicago. I don't love DA, but he would be an upgrade for about half the teams in the league.

Evan (NJ): Is the AFC North a 2 team race next year between Pitt & Cle? Cinn & Blt seem in too disarray to legitamately contend.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: It sure seems that way. Lets see how free agency and the draft pan out first though.

matt, mpls: So why does Braylon get a pass on the dropped balls, but somebody like TO gets hammered for them. Just cause TO is so outspoken?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: I think so. TO was very unfairly hammered last year for all those drops. He had a broken hand!!!

SportsNation Matt Williamson:

Jon (SLC): I keep seeing names like Chad Johnson and Fitz pop up as potentially being traded. What are the chances one or both of these guys lands in a different city next year, really? And if so, please be Miami.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: I wouldn't deal either. Renegociate with Fitz and lock him up long term. 85 is a stud. Don't move either! JWalk is a different story.

Ryan (Chicago,Il): I know your not a big Jackson fan. He has some mechanical issues. But he has to have the worst 1-5 receivers and pass catching TE's in the league? Doesn't he deserve a chance with a decent group of pass catchers?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Not a Jackson fan at all, but yes, you are right. His weapons are poor. They have some guys who can be decent like Rice, but finding a true #1 should be their top priority-easier said than done.

Matt (Iowa): I think Fitz would look great with a star on his helmet. Could you see the Boy's trading one of their first rounders for him, or did the resigning of Crayton pretty much end that?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Ends that. TO, Glenn, Crayton and Fitz?

Tom (SoCal): Matt, Can you see Miami drafting the stud Fred Davis(USC) in the 2nd round?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: He is a good player and will go in the 2nd round. 33rd overall seems too high for me though and Miami has bigger needs than TE.

Steve (Moscow, Idaho): Minny needs a #1 WR, Denver needs a DT, how about a Javon Walker for Williams trade?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Nice try. The Williams boys aren't going anywhere.

Jeremy (OH): Is it possible the Saints move Bush to WR?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: No, but could split him out wide more and more. It would be wise. Still, he will still be a RB.

Travis (Dallas, TX): Where do you see Felix Jones landing in the draft?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: He looks like a great fit for the Cowboys with M Barber doesn't he?

SportsNation Matt Williamson:

Steve in C-NY: Matt, You just said if Terry Glenn gets cut or retires or is dealt to the WR starving Fins/Tuna for a 5th rounder, then Big D would have the room and #1 pick to give to AZ!

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Perhaps. Or Roy Williams (from Texas). Still, that is a LOT of speculation! Plus, can Big D really afford another massive contract?

michael (lake charles, la): does the forecast for the chargers v.s. colts really look that bad for san diego. i think they are a great team but everyone is predicting a blowout

SportsNation Matt Williamson: I give them a lot of credit for how well they are playing of late, but they are overmatched in Indy. Blow out.

Ryan (Chicago,IL): Whats your opinion on McFadden vs. AD? I think AD is better than him in every facet of the game.

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Agreed. AD doesn't throw or catch the ball as well. Still, that is minor. I like McFadden a lot, but also think that he is a shade overrated.

Travis (Dallas, TX): Since we all know Roy Williams (cowboys) is terrible in coverage, would it be a good idea to move him to LB?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Doesn't fit Dallas' 3-4 as a LB. Would be a good Tampa 2 type of WLB though with a little more weight.

jermy(syracuse): so troy williamson must have been a bust for the vikes?

SportsNation Matt Williamson: Yes. Could be gone this year. He is the type of player who wouldn't surprise me if he became a decent big play weapon for the next team he shows up on. Folks, I gotta run. Enjoyed it. Have fun this weekend.

Do you expect Chris Long to be gone when Jets pick at #6? When will you update your mock draft?

Jd Drew what?

You can cite JD Drew all you want, 26 Rings, but it's never been clear the Red Sox tampered. They very well could have-- although the Dodgers never filed complaint-- but we don't have obvious, in-your-face proof of the Red Sox tampering to talk about.

We're talking about Hank Steinbluster's tampering. Because he was dumb enough to do his tampering right in front of us.

The Red Sox could have tampered with JD Drew, definitely...... and we don't even know for sure. I guess John Henry needs to get a loudmouth son named Hank to make things more clear to us.
